flakeloaf posted:Vandals accidentally spraypaint memorial's own message on it I mean in theory sure, but in practice most war memorials have been co-opted into a pretty pro-war "support are troops" kinda deal. Most people spend Armstice day jerking off about how great soldiers are with absolutely no thought given towards how lovely war is, which should be the whole point.

There really needs to be some form of real world "Come and See" experience to drill it into people's skulls that war is loving Terrifying and destructive. Maybe spend remembrance day firing off fifteen cannons every second for five hours straight until the gunfire becomes a background thrum. But you'd still get some daft fucker having the time of his life.

PT6A posted:You'd still have this problem even if you showed people actual war with real dead people and poo poo. Because some people are really, really hosed up. Yep, some people are. Most people would probably come away from it with a larger understanding of how much it sucks to let things get so bad politically that the situation ends up being solved by sending people to go kill each other. The most sobering video I ever saw of war was a silent film of a WW1 no mans land charge. It wasn't full of explosions and chaos and stuff it was just a group of people running in mud and then a guy falls down. Because he's dead. No being thrown in the air, no dramatic pause or arms flayed out, just he's running and then all of a sudden he just flops like he's been turned off. Because he got shot and now he's dead and that's that. gently caress that bullshit. The fact that we're 100 years out from the great war and we're still dealing with that war's fallout should be enough but pparently it isn't. People think that because those wars are in the past the problems are all resolved.

You need only look at how "wrong" a place like the Somme valley or Verdun looks with the world's attempt to heal. Sure they're covered in green grass and young trees, but the earth should not look like it has had ice cream scoops carved out of it. We shouldn't have to maintain a red zone across France and Germany's border where we dig up unexploded ordnance every year. The clusterfuck in the middle east might not be a direct symptom of Sykes-Picot but it certainly amplified the chaos. Closer to home stuff like the conscription crisis is heavily responsible for the cultural divide between English and French Canada. You could talk all day about what benefits come from war but very few of those positives could come exclusively from conflict. They don't outweigh the human cost.

A decade ago I would have been a prime recruit for MRA groups and anti Muslim alt-right stuff. I was someone who staunchly believed in the idea that there is an organized conspiracy to replace the Caucasian race with arabs and people of middle eastern descent. Iive also once touched a woman inappropriately which I have deeply regretted and worked to make amends for both with her and by challenging other men who feel entitled to that sort of behavior. People grow up. People change. I was fortunate enough to have been educated by both men and women who saw I was on the wrong path and influenced by the wrong people. And I’m grateful they didn’t just turn me away and demonize me and instead see I was capable of reform. Kraftwerk fucked around with this message at 19:34 on Oct 9, 2018 |
