This was a very common thing in late medieval and early Renaissance militaries. Persons if common birth could join mercenary units and enjoy far greater freedoms and prosperity than was ever possible in their home communities. They were exempt from taxes, sumptuary laws, and could travel freely. They were also treated with respect by people of higher social stratas. If they left military life, they could expect to lose all of those benefits. Circumstances in the inner sphere can be very similar and it's not surprising that being a lifetime mercenary can be a valid, rational decision.

That was a fun mechanic. If your expensive mec-- uh, HERC was looking beat up and you didn't want to lose it, you could OD and kill your pilot thus focusing enemy fire away from the zombie robot.

What’s more, if you own the Flashpoint DLC, allying with a faction will unlock access to some of the hardest content in the game. We’ve created one punishingly difficult Flashpoint for each faction with tremendous rewards at the end, touching on major events and conflicts of the setting’s timeline. You’ll be working directly with your faction’s representative, taking on sensitive, top-secret missions to advance their interests in the region.

I felt this needed to be pointed out. This is really cool.

GBS Pledge Week
That rep design seems pretty good, what shipped with the game seemed pretty unfinished. Or the bones of a system that never had anything built on top.

Hopefully they increase the number of contracts available. Anyone that wants to keep their options open and balance their rep with lots of factions is gonna have to be even pickier about which jobs they take. (And optimize the contract generator -- you can bump contracts per system in simgameconstants now but it makes the contract screen kinda slow.)

HBS says:

Kiva's only talking about the 5 Great Houses here.
in reference to the unique super-hard flashpionts... but Kurita & Steiner barely show up on the map. Seems kinda a shame to have them and not Canopus & Taurians, but I guess it's more a thing for the battletech fans who have their fave IS nation. Unless maybe the map will be expanding?

neat, hadn't thought about it that way. still doesn't really make a ton of sense for the battletech mercenaries, but toss it in with all the other history imports that are nonsensical when stripped of their context.

I tried that dz company commander mod and my starting lance had an urbanmech, which was cool, and then it got eaten by some glitch when I completed two new mechs from salvaged parts but only had one open mech bay. :(

Seriously I hope the new expansion/patch makes urbanmechs actually appear in the game.

They're more common in stores but still not going to show up much in the opfor, because digging through the content to identify which lances in which contracts can cope with having urbies in them is a long and tedious task and I don't feel like doing it right now.

That's fair. I get that they're basically a joke mech and should probably be pretty rare on the simple account that they likely don't make for very good gameplay as a player mech or an enemy mech.

I don't know if this has changed, but I think you said at launch that the urbie got knocked out of a lot of lance configs because it was so slow and messed up the ai a little. Might not still be valid though.
