I'm in Ward 7 and I got Esther Paul. She came by the house a few weeks ago and I shouted her off the property after she complained that the LRT would do nothing for people up the Mountain so it was a waste and then started taking up the Conservative Party.

Our previous councillor was the execrable Donna Skelly (heh, my phone corrected that as Smelly), so I suppose this is the status quo for me. I'm happy to see that we still have a good mayor and got several new people on Council.

Also congrats Toronto for narrowly not electing a literal neo-nazi.

Maybe Toronto should just lean into this and turn the mayor into an entirely powerless ceremonial position. Like the Queen. Have the city council do all the actual work, and for mayor we'll just elect the biggest clown we can find, as we tend to do already.

There was some stuff the council did to limit Doug Ford's ability to do things.

The Star posted:

Councillors decided by a 37-5 vote to cut the mayor’s budget and by a 36-6 vote to transfer many of Ford’s deputies and much of his budget to Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly.

A 32-10 vote decreed Ford could no longer set key matters on the legislative agenda.

Another 37-5 vote removed the mayor’s right to fill vacancies on the civic appointments committee.

He still retains statutory and symbolic powers, and can still attend official functions as Toronto’s mayor, but he no longer has the clout associated with a CEO.

The vote follows six months of turmoil and scandal, triggered by reports of a video in which Ford appears to smoke crack cocaine and make homophobic and racist remarks.

In recent days, Ford has admitted to buying crack cocaine and smoking it, as well as possibly driving while drunk, but vehemently denied he is an addict or an alcoholic.

The council decision means most of Ford’s real powers are transferred to the deputy mayor’s office until Nov. 3, after the next election.

So I guess in mild surprise, for ward 14, Chris Budo came in a close-to-second third place with almost 20% of the vote. Budo is the 22-year-old son of a guy who owns a laundromat on the Danforth. My dad said that when they came to his door, Chris kind of stood in the back while the dad did the talking. It seems like his parents spent a poo poo ton of money on the campaign: his signs were everywhere, and notably had four colours instead of the usual two.

I wonder if he disappears or takes another crack next time. I imagine his prospects would be a fair bit poorer without Fletcher and Fragedakis splitting the NDP vote.

Probably true. I couldn't see a way to reject/spoil the ballot on the on-line system, and rather than try to figure it out or ask for help I just tapped the screen and finished.

It was very much like any other on-line survey, with bigger text. The "Next" button was grey and unresponsive until I made a choice.
