This has always been, in my mind, the biggest source of "why didn't they just...?" in Star Trek, to be honest, but since it was introduced as a concept in the Star Trek universe in "The Trouble with Tribbles" I can't fault it because, cliche as this opinion might be, TTWT is completely perfect and to change it would be heresy.

Had we had Ro on DS9, would Michelle Forbes career be altered to such a degree that we wouldn't have had her play Admiral Cain?

Forbes was also offered the chance to return on Star Trek: Voyager, but again turned it down.

simplefish posted:Fair enough. Do you have a source, I'd like to know more It's in a bunch of the making of stuff. Here's a few quotes from an early version of the DS9 series bible from memory alpha: quote:Ro Laren's entry stated, "Established on ST:TNG. She is properly addressed as Lieutenant Ro since Bajorans put their family names first. (Note: She will receive a promotion from Ensign to Lieutenant on an episode of ST:TNG before this series begins.) As a Bajoran, Ro cares passionately about her people's independence. That's why she volunteered for duty on the space station. Sisko originally refused to accept her transfer...He didn't want anything to do with someone with her undistinguished service record and reputation. But during the first episode, she proves her value to him and becomes his first officer." In Jadzia Dax's entry in the bible, a friendship between Ro and Jadzia was suggested: "Ro, who forms a very close relationship with Dax, often tells her to loosen up. Dax admires Ro for her youthful energy, her purpose and her drive and becomes something of a mentor to her." In Odo's entry, Ro "finds Odo's negative attitude to authority delightful and they have a Bajoran fellowship." The bible entry for Quark posited that he and Ro would become adversaries.

I'm obviously being a little facetious, you're supposed to approach Trek with the assumption that people, Especially Picard, are morally upstanding and that the inferred sexism and unfair pressure on subordinates, etc, is just that, inferres. It's like Pick said, that big inconsistency from ttwt sets in and has a ton of unexplored consequences in future writing. it's hard to separate the implications of fiction from the reality of our own lives.

The writers seemed to forget that with Garak too, like "oh yeah I was a gardener at the Cardassian embassy on Romulus" as an access point, but uhh? Second Skin (and Star Trek generally) show that you get the cosmetic surgery to look like a member of the other species, you don't need an excuse to be Cardassian on Romulus, you'd just look like a Romulan. Of course Garak's messing with Odo and is a pathological liar, not to mention doesn't actually want to face consequences for whatever murders have gone about, so he's certainly lying at least to some extent about it, but tbh I think in that particular exchange, the writers simply forgot. However, imho it's why Garak's shown as actually knowing other languages, like Klingon, because otherwise you could be sussed out pretty quick if you couldn't speak the language without the UT. I dunno, there's always that fine line between "it makes sense if you turn your head" and "hey writers, you forgot [x] thing again".

I think Michelle Forbes is great, but Nana Visitor was just perfect for that role. They needed an ambitious, intense, angry riot grrl and they found one. Forbes is a very internal actor, she does a lot with a raised eyebrow or a glance in the distance, and I just can't imagine that working for Kira.

Nana Visitor makes Kira lovable which is a pretty crazy feat, because there's genuinely a lot to dislike about Kira. But Kira's great!

I wonder if they would have toned Ro down into the bland-character muck with Paris and Kim and Chakotay, or managed to keep her interesting. Or perhaps they would have figured they only needed one Rebellious But Capable Girl on the show and never come up with Torres at all.

But that's not all! Open hailing frequencies within the next five dar'teQ to receive a free set of seven ket'leth; each sturdy blade forged from a lock of hair dipped in a molten river of obsidian, just as Kahless the Unforgettable did a millennia ago to forge the first bat'leth! These blades will slice and dice even the sturdiest ja'Joq roots, and can still skin a targ keenly even after years of glorious use!

I'm sure a gardener at an embassy between two powers known for their, ah, vested interest in security and intelligence was quite bored. He was a very good gardener, though.
