Said I'd post my Granddad's last flight log earlier, so here it is. He was a navigator in a Fairey Barracuda torpedo bomber flying from carriers. Stuff in italics I added.

-----

Date: May 16th 1944

Object: To search 125 miles West to ascertain Met conditions.

Conditions prior to departure:

Weather: Visibility 1-2 miles, less in squalls. Height of cloud 1500’.

Air craft arranged on deck & crew took stations for catapulting. Take off delayed due to passing squall. Whilst standing by TAG V (Telegraphist Air Gunner), Smyth reported that a bullet had been fired from his gun and had entered fuselage. Aircraft struck down and another ranged. Just time to align D.R. (Direct Reading) compass & tune beacon before takeoff.

1045: Airborne circled ship-retuned beacon & waited for DR compass to settle down.

1100: Departure taken on magnetic compass. DR compass still unstable. Height 1000’ TAS 140 (True Air Speed?) Visibility 2 miles.

1115: W/F (Wind... factor?) Wind 270/16. DR Compass settled down.

1120: Motor horn tested- unsuccessful. Time baseline shortened and transmitter charging over 25amps. Although weather had deteriorated decided to continue owing to the importance of mission. Visibility 200 yards reduced in sleety squall.

1135: Height 800 feet. Weather very bad & still deteriorating.

1140: W/F 270/16

1200: Altered course for base.

1210: W/F smoke float failure.

1214: Another attempt at W/F-smoke float failure.

1220: W/F smoke float failure.

1224: W/F smoke float failure.

Height 600’ less than 1500 yards visibility. Occasional glimpses of sea surface indicated that wind had increased in strength. Could only estimate since no smoke floats remained. Switched on beacon – nothing received and volume tuning failed to give responsive surge. ETA 1250

1250: ETA. Visibility 1500 yards - beacon lifeless - checked over fuses all OK assumed volume control unsuccessful. Carried out square search.

1300: Estimated wind visually 270/27. Proceeded up wind to find break in weather.

1310: Recommended square search on new relative wind. No improvement in vis. Called up ship on T1366 (Radio?). No reply.

1330: Considered further square searching useless. Decided to climb to maximum height compatible with weather conditions. Switched on Cockerel (beacon?) to distress.

1340: Height 4000’. Flying straight and level on steady course & returning on reciprocal, to facilitate fixing of position by ship. Requested D/F bq. (Direction finder... something?)

1350: No reply. Requesting homing of T1366. Further request for D/F bg.-no response. It was now a question of whether we should persist with square search or make for Norwegian Coast which might be reached by proceeding down wind & using weak mixture. It was considered that in view of weather conditions and inability to communicate with base, it was a remote possibility that ship would be sighted.

1400: Set course for Norwegian coast-distance 130 miles approx. Tas 120 Height 500’ ETA 1500 (Approx) chart did not cover it.

1415: Jettisoned all confidential books. Visibility 1500 yards encountering sleet storms.

1445: Flying at sea level to avoid detection by RDF (Radio Direction Finding) stations.

1500: Break in clouds – visibility 4 miles Norwegian coast sighted. Difficulty in determining exact geographical position. Believed us to be Aamdanes since a light house sighted on promontory of land to the North. Flew South along coast-sighted a level stretch of sand suitable for forced landing. It was imperative to land now as petrol gauges were not registering.

1515: Belly landing successful. Crew unscathed.

Action of Force Landing: Aircraft set on fire by firing petrol tanks with Very (flare) cartridges. The detonation unsuccessful Cockerel & Motor horn completely wrecked. Whilst salvaging useful equipment, a Norwegian from nearby village led us to understand that a Quisling in village had telephoned the Germans who were stationed on eastern side of the island. After ensuring that aircraft was completely destroyed, we circumvented the village in order not to compromise the inhabitants. Cont. Out of sight of the village we took cover in a cowshed off the road so we might discuss future actions. Few minutes later we saw German troops pass down the road in trucks on the way to the scene of the crash. We waited until they were out of sight and made off in the opposite direction but as we topped the rise of the hill we came face to face with :siren:Goons:siren: on a motor cycle combination and that was that.

-----

TL;DR: Some numpty shot the first plane they were given while loving about prior to take-off, they got lost in bad weather and had to make for Norway. They crash-landed there and ended up in Stalag Luft 3. I've got his entire POW diary posted here in an old military history thread if anyone's interested.

PS: "Goons" was a common derogatory nickname for Germans at the time. They got away with using it in the POW camps by telling the guards it stood for "German Officer Or Non-commissioned".
