so loving happy for her, especially because this went down to the wire last night with like being behind by a mere 800 VOTES. Huge loving win for gun reform and education.

I'm trying to be optimistic about this. Like, yes, the Dems took the House, but goddamn, so much of this seems like the bare minimum of what we could have expected. I'm happy that Walker is out, that Maine really repudiated LePage, that MA voted yes on 3, etc. etc. The Senate was probably always going to go this way, where we lost a couple of seats, but I really could have used Steve King losing, or Gillum winning, or Iron Stache winning, or Beto. I was really hoping for at least one impressive upset. It feels like if this is the best we can do in a climate where the GOP has almost gone out of their way to make the party associated with incompetent, angry greed, that things are going to swing rapidly back when we have someone halfway competent bearing their standard. It makes a difference having taken the House, it does, but it still feels like we have to be super cautious going forward, and that this actually doesn't bode well for 2020.

Here's an upside: Virginia, which was a swing state 6 years ago, is now reliably blue and has majority Democratic congressional representation. I'll be thrilled when the state legislatures flip completely in the coming years and they have a trifecta. Again, I cannot believe a seat that was held by Eric Cantor who was primaried not being conservative enough just elected a Democrat.

MojoAZ posted:This is a hyper-local result, but important for people who care about public lands: it appears that two Navajos will take seats on the 3-person San Juan County commission in Utah. San Juan County is home to the former Bears Ears National Monument, and until this election was populated entirely by RABID public lands opponents. The county's districting was found to be racially gerrymandered. Even after a court drew new districts, the county sheriff attempted to invalidate one candidate's spot on the ballot by alleging he lived in AZ. The court overturned that and the Justice department eventually had to send election monitors to make sure that native americans were not intimidated out of voting. So this is a pretty big victory for anti-gerrymandering, native rights and for public lands. Was this featured on a episode of Last Week Tonight? I vaguely remember hearing about this and I’m absolutely thrilled!

TulliusCicero posted:The Evangelical South is too strong a wall for Trump. Dixieland (with the possible exception of the Carolinas, which look vulnerable) is going to be his base. North Carolina’s been a battleground for awhile, but South Carolina probably shouldn’t be considered to be in play. Joe Cunningham’s win can be chalked up to the fact that Mark Sanford lost his primary, and that environmentalism (read: protecting tourism dollars) is a winning issue for the coast. He also got a couple last-minute endorsements from state republicans, which I don’t see happening in 2020. Hieronimous Alloy is more plugged into state politics than I am, he can probably speak more about the midlands and upstate.
