I was expecting a complete blowout but he actually held her to a respectable margin, especially given an anemic campaign. But regardless it seems we're stuck with her until someone finds her phylactery/horcrux/insert other joke about her being a deathless lich.

Yeah, giving these powerful corporations or other institutions, which already have access to legislators and the writing of law, a way to do an end-run around those duly-elected legislators whenever they don't like the outcome is a major corrupting force. And the prop system was enacted back when the population was less than a tenth of what it is now; it might've been reasonable to educate a voting population of a few hundred thousand (at best). A potential voting population of 20 million is another story. They're going to get their info from whoever can afford to run the most ads.

EXISTENCE IS PAIN😬
People hate the idea of someone they consider inferior or lazier somehow getting any kind of benefit or parity. We are classist as hell.

Wasn't there some survey that basically asked, "If you were the boss, what pay structure would you favor? You getting 120k and your subordinates getting 100k, or you getting 60k and your subordinates getting 20k?" And people tended to choose the latter, because they coudln't bear the idea of someone 'below' them making nearly as much money as they are.

yeah, this.

the fact that the typical american is stressed out and busy as hell from working multiple jobs and doesnt have the time or energy to do the amount of research necessary to make an informed vote, or that doing that research is nearly impossible because most of the information you come across is going to be bullshit propaganda and you have to be savvy enough to figure this out, or the fact that the wealthy few can use their wealth to warp the political discussion and create these unending piles of bullshit that every normal person has to try and sift through are all perversions of democracy at a fundamental level.

DaVita shares soared Wednesday after California voters rejected a ballot measure that would have capped the amount of money dialysis providers in the state can earn on certain patients.

In a statement Wednesday, the SEIU said DaVita and the dialysis industry used "massive spending to scare and mislead Californians; imagine if that money had been spent to improve conditions in the clinics instead."

I don't. That's the point. It shouldn't have been a proposition in the first place. It's the type of issue that needs to be decided by a state labor board or whatever, not the voters.

Two props both were about healthcare availability and the superficial read on both was that approving them would increase or maintain access to healthcare.

People are utterly terrified about their healthcare. They are very conscious about it. If you had put M4A on the same ballot it would have won massively.

6’s wording definitely saved it. It was winning pretty handily at first. I also think there’s just enough people now who aren’t covered by Prop 13 to get people to vote against more handouts for the gentry. Classism remains strong as ever, of course.

Basically anyone can submit an argument for or against, and then the Secretary of State's office picks one to represent the for side and one to represent the against, and then gives each a chance at rebuttal. There are some specific rules for which argument takes precedence over which I think. If nothing is submitted for a side then the Secretary of State is supposed to basically put out a cattle call to the public to get an argument.

At the local level, this is handled by the county board of elections rather than the Secretary of State. Counties often also have paid slots in their voter guides for people who's argument hasn't been chosen. In SF the cost for this is $200 plus $2 per word.

I know at least several people who purposely don’t vote because “there’s no difference between Dems and the GOP” and “all props are designed to screw you over one way or another and you’re an idiot for trusting the government at all”. They then send me a link of that one George Carlin bit and go on their way.

* East gets you the rich Granite Bay people.
* North to Loomis gets you the deranged hillbillies. (like my extended family)
