this isn't really the right place for this, but why on earth can such disparate things be amendments to bills? Shouldn't amendments be about the substantial legislation being passed? Not "Should we ban offshore drilling? And oh, that means we can also take you grannies' medication when she has her 70th birthday"

how do you judge what's relevant?

does the legislature vote on it? then you've just moved the vote on the amendment to a vote on whether the amendment should be voted on, adding an opportunity for succ to go "i would have voted for it if it had actually come up but we couldn't bring it to the floor tee-hee" or conversely "i didn't vote for it, i only made sure that it got a fair up-or-down vote"

does the committee from which the legislation originated vote on it? then you need to rework how committees work or it will only take one succ to torpedo any bill

does an appointed scholar or panel thereof make the call? if they're appointed for long terms you've got all the problems of the supreme court, even if they're appointed per session it basically codifies the hastert rule

do you just limit the length of bills? most things considered at the federal or state level are pretty loving complex, this limits the ability of the government to actually fix things rather than just "the congress resolves that x should not be dicks"

it also opens up plenty of general fuckery like "this is a budget bill not a foreign policy bill, amending the line item for bombs to include 'shall not be sold on to Saudi Arabia if we know they're going to be dropped on Yemen' is outside the purview" or "senator manchin agrees with us that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, so even though you can probably whip him to vote for the clean air act as a whole you're not getting action on global warming in it"

it's also both deeply antidemocratic, and opens the pandora's box of allowing a legislature to restrict a future legislature's actions - there's a reason that even the most hallowed traditional rules of the house and senate are re-passed each session and technically optional, while actual hard restrictions on their powers derive from either explicit constitutional provisions (nominally the will of the people) or the ability of other branches to refrain from enforcing.

Seems like something for the judiciary. It's another "only in America" problem so handwaving about "oh what can be done???" is a bit silly.

so you're suggesting judicial review for every amendment, in a system which has decade-long struggles (not just in america, but worldwide) over the small fraction of bills which are passed and found objectionable for other reasons?
and you're suggesting it be done by legacy appointees, ie that for the next 40 years bret kavanaugh and his four closest friends retain entirely subjective, not even bound by precedent or constitutional law but purely based on judgment calls, over anything a blue house and senate want to do under president sanders in 2026, or a that other red house and senate want to do under general secretary carter in 2054?

and you want this so much you're willing to enshrine the legal theory that congresses can restrain future congresses, which moves the bar for the constitutional amendment process down to 218 reps and 50 senators? so once you get your way we can immediately have permanent paygo and bans on universal healthcare/recognizing trans individuals/ever decriminalizing drugs?

So like, on a major bill someone will tack on "also fund this poo poo for our district/state" and it's not worth holding up major legislation to get bogged down over. This is what I remember from high school civics though so ymmv. Mr Smith goes to Washington kills all hope imo

Well that's good to know, though I don't think they can really do much about latency unless they change the speed of light and that tends to be the thing I gripe about the most

I'm not actually all that into online games tbh I'm just a super dork that does super dork networking bullshit as a hobby. I'd probably be fine with NZ internet but I'm spoiled right now with a fiber connection that can ping my VPS up in New Jersey in <10ms. I haven't seen pings over 100ms very often at all since I left my parents' lovely DSL years ago, so that would take some... adjustment :v:

It's because a lot of people have the mindset that America is a place you aspire to move to, not from. To them it would be like winning the lottery and immediately giving all the money away, or something.
