Anyone check out Outlaw King? The Hell or High Water director and it being a semisequel to Braveheart make it sound kinda appealing.

I put House of Cards the Final Season as the "I'm going to watch this to get it over with." Kevin Spacey was so integral to the show that the entire final season is spent mentioning his successes and massive failures but never showing him. In fact, the only time his face ever, ever showed up was once for one and a half seconds, and it was the recap video they add before you start the show. I'm guessing you practically have to erase him, because having his face or his voice would involve paying him, which is the last thing anybody is going to want to do at this time.

so here are my extremely spoiler-filled thoughts on S2 of Patriot, a loving excellent show that almost nobody on the entire planet of earth has seen (I know this isn't a remotely scientific measurement, but fwiw, the Patriot subreddit has 1,000 subscribers and the Walking Dead subreddit has 627,000.) Steven Conrad has described the show as a kind of anti-spy-narrative, where you're not rooting for the protagonist to complete the task, you're rooting for him not to. Everything John's father asks him to do chips away at his sanity, but John just keeps moving forward because that's his duty, that's what he does. One redditor mentioned that his dad treated veterans and didn't want to continue watching the show because he didn't want to see John's inevitable decompensation, implying that John suffering from PTSD was a foregone conclusion even a year ago. Patriot is basically a more grim and patient Coen Brothers film. It takes a while to get where it's going, and it's often funny, bit it's often extremely sad, and I respect the hell out of that.

I'm four episodes into Patriot season 1 and it makes me feel....uneasy? Lakeman is really obviously hosed up and his family just keeps pushing.

The composition of a scene near the end of s1, where is sat in his pipe, is near flawless. Those pipes kept bringing the three ring design of Micky Mouse to mind while I was watching it.

A lot of times people throw around "it's basically a mega long movie" but I feel like Patriot is the only show where that's completely accurate. The way things tie back in (Gil Bellows and the Asian escorts and the Twizzlers in season 1 for example) throughout and give you a new perspective on events from different angles shows that not only was the season planned out, but is incredibly rewatchable in a way that the best movies are. I've watched season 1 at least 5 times all the way through and will likely do the same with season 2. Just an absolutely delightful blend of Wes Anderson twee whimsy, Coen Bros style weirdness in the face of very serious poo poo, and a little hint of Tarantino. And yet so much better than that sounds on paper

And things brought up even way back in S1 continue to crop up at the end of S2; (ending of S2 spoilers) Leslie giving that final pitch, the Denon pitch, in the final episode, is what the company has been working toward since the pilot; Agathe is after John because of a thing that happened in the pilot; Dennis glommed onto him in the pilot which is the only reason S2 was able to end the way it did. But the biggest aspect of it imo is his just torturous increasing weariness at every loving horrible thing he has to do, which is why the very last shot is so good. He's just utterly broken, and any sane person would be, and it's a great job by Michael Dorman as his face just falls apart in that final shot. I honestly think he's one of the most broken characters I've ever seen, in part because he keeps going even though all of it makes him feel so horrible.

Up there with Rectify S1. 3 episodes in on season 2, and I agree it is one of the best shows since 2010 (I think Halt & Catch Fire, and The Leftovers might have my top spots). It is total bullshit that if it wasn't for this forum I would have never watched it. Even with season 2, outside of an email, I have seen nothing promoting the show. Hell, it took me a couple of minutes to find the show on the Amazon app on the day it was released. Also this morning I accidentally stumbled upon the theory that Bon Jovi is Michael Dorman's father. Not sure how (why would Bon Jovi be in New Zeland in 1981 before he was famous), but whatever. Edit: Rectify has been on my list to watch, but I still haven't. Maybe I will correct that during the Thanksgiving break.

I'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread already, but last night I watched The Night Comes For Us and it was loving crazy. I've never really been interested in movies like this, I pretty much watched it on a whim because I'd heard positive things, and I was completely absorbed. I have no idea why I didn't watch films like this before, but after that I want to watch every film Iko Uwais has ever been in.

Patriot Season 2 isn't doing it for me. The gun stealing sequence with the folk song narration was awesome, but the rest feels like a filler episode of the Walking Dead so far. A lot of walking around and talking about being sad. The humor doesn't have the same punch as season 1 either.

I liked season 2 more than season 1 tbh. Season 1's humor was a lot more dark cringe/the office style, and I feel this season's humor is more cohen brothers/tarantino humor, which is my jam.

In both films (and in both battles) the tactics were devised prior and the combat was rightfully depicted as barely controlled chaos hurtling toward a planned conclusion. The Raid 2 is a more complex ensemble gangster movie with several different factions betraying each other and a lot of characters to juggle at once. It's definitely not the perfectly streamlined experience that The Raid is but in it's own way it's an even better film. But to get the most out of it you really do have to stay focused on it in a way that The Raid doesn't require. Also, by turning it off at the halfway point you missed out on at least 2 or 3 extremely good fight scenes.

Outlaw King was pretty good, but I did not get the dick that the internet promised me. Also it felt like the story was too big for a 2 hour movie, maybe it should have been a 3 or 4 part mini series.
