My one regret about DW3 is that there are four versions, none of which I can really call the "definitive" version that I would recommend over all others.

My personal favorite is the Gameboy Color one, but the NES one and the mobile phone one are both good as well!

I know it might seem weird to some people given the system's screen size and color limitations, but it comes down mostly to graphics for me. DQ3 does so much with so little and everything looks so perfect.

That's not from act2 -> 3

or rather it dupes whatever your party had equipped / in their inventory when you finish act1

Yes it is. And it's absolutely what they're wearing at the time.

Just to clarify: Yes, the dupe happens when you go from act2 to 3 but it only duplicates whatever they had equipped / in their inventory at the end of act1.

e: the point is it's too late for them to worry about that for act3 because it's way past that point for this relatively minor thing.

Man, I have such heavy great nostalgia for DW3 and DW4. Can we all just gush about those NES games for a bit? One thing that stands out was how they gave NPCs little paths to give you the feeling the towns were alive. (at least in DW4). For example; the cook in the kitchen would go back and forth from the stove to the sink. Small poo poo like that.

Being a kid; it was a major feat making it through the game, let alone figuring out what to do next. I would kill for a poster sized map of both of those games.

Thanks for listening to my boring story of how much I love those two games.

DW4 was the pinnacle of what NES games could do. I think it was the largest game, code-wise, as well.

I finally got stuck in DQIV. Made it quite a ways in to Chapter 5 before I ran out of places to poke at. Had to look up a walkthrough for some hints and I don't know how I would've thought to use the Magma Staff to get rid of that mountain. What the? How the hell does that even work? Sure would've been nice to be clued in on that one! I'm guessing there must have been some inane townsperson from some random place who casually mentioned it like, 10 hours and 20 sessions ago. Grrr.

These older games in the series are so lame with their guidance sometimes. I wonder if stuff like this will get better or worse with the new ones that came after the Nintendo Power era of B.S. secrets.

I'm positive that there is an NPC, or NPCs, who mention where to use the Magma Staff.

I adore 3, but 4 was very, very technically impressive and very groundbreaking in terms of storytelling. Adding an AI system for chapter 5 was incredibly impressive for its time, and it was very well done for what it was. Speaking personally, though, I wish that they had given it a miss or made it optional (if that were even possible at the time).

4 was kind of looked over as well because it came out so late in the NESs life cycle that everyone was playing the SNES by then.

Meanwhile, I'm nearing the end of Act 3 and it feels good.

At this point the character inventory system is pretty much another relic, especially given you can pull weapons out of the bag.

Even then there's almost three decades of QoL missing. New items should automatically go in the bag, a character's equipment should be separate from their other carried items, and if you really wanted to pull out all the stops consumables should automatically restock from the bag between fights.

Its a little bit of a regression from DQ8 imo. I thought the grid of icons was easier to parse at a glance and the menu overall was snappier to navigate.

The DQ8 (PS2) menu was a custom exclusive for the international versions, and it ran at 60fps where the rest of the game was 30 (or less). But they forgot to give it a 16:9 mode, so it looks all stretched where the rest of the game had that implemented properly.

It was also subject to massive amounts of load times and input lag which is probably a good chunk of the reason why I never finished the game until the 3DS version.

IMO the inventory system in DQ is great and getting rid of it would remove an entire layer of strategy from the series.

The problem is that the importance of character inventories has decreased in each game to the point that it's now vestigial, being simultaneously a pain to deal with and not very relevant.

A better system would be one where equipment is tracked separately from consumables and every character gets four inventory slots for items, which are automatically replenished from the bag between fights. It'd turn the inventory back into a gameplay element where you have to decide what items would be the most useful instead of a micromanagement/upkeep exercise where you periodically have to clean out the trash and ensure everyone has a full set of HP/MP restoratives and status items.

I know it's less relevant with DQ11 being a massive hit but I can't wait for this to not be translated

TBH it’s not like they haven’t made things a lot more standardized in general. Remember when Frizz, Sizz, and Fire Breath were considered three separate elements gameplay-wise? Hell, just letting you redo skill trees for a pittance or money is better than some current games. Inventory is probably just gonna get cleared up in 12, along with, what, making debuffs a less trial/error and making Fuddle not trash?

The problem is that you're going too early in the day. Find a campsite (I use the one outside Heliodor because it's first on the Zoom list) and just rest until noon. Whenever you rest to try to get the jackpot prediction, always rest until noon. You could just wander around for a couple of in-game hours and wait for them to open, but the game doesn't have a clear way of marking the exact time so I'd just rest.

If you stop in Gondolia, the NPCs there mention the situation in Gallopolis. Which makes sense, considering that it's the closest port town to Gallopolis.

With regards to the jackpot bunny girl, she can say 3 different things after telling you how much the jackpot is;

1) Nothing
2) Get the feeling someone will win before long (jackpot odds +)
3) Someone is going to win real soon (jackpot odds +++)

You'll have to rest somewhere and come back to make her reset, and yes, this can take several trips before she she gives you better odds.
