In the conservative mind, if you're poor, it's because of one of two reasons: 1) you're lazy (no income) 2) you're poo poo with money (so you "waste" your income) After many years of speaking with conservatives I can tell you that what qualifies as "laziness" is working less than 60 hours per week and what qualifies as a "spendthrift" is literally "anything beyond the absolute basics to physically survive" They'll tell you with a straight face that some poor person should work two jobs and eat nothing but beans and rice for 7 years in a tiny bare apartment with a single chair just to afford some small signifier of middle-class existence.
