quote:

Wage theft is becoming so systematic in Queensland, it is estimated to be stripping almost $2.5 billion from the economy every year, a parliamentary report has found.

...

The report made 17 recommendations to improve system responses to wage theft, many of which are directed at the Federal Government.
The Committee recommended the Queensland Government conduct a public education campaign to assist in the fight against wage theft, working with the higher education sector to ensure international students had advice on workplace rights, including their right to join a union.
It also recommended wage theft be legislated as a criminal offence.

...

LNP members of the wage theft inquiry issued a statement of reservation about the recommendations.
"The LNP strongly maintains our opposition to union activism being taught in Queensland schools," the statement said.
"We have concerns about recommendations for a national labour hire licensing approach, given there has been no review of the effectiveness of Queensland's new laws.
"We also have concerns about making wage theft a new criminal offence as there are already existing criminal code offences that are sufficient and should be enforced."

Not to downplay the crime of theft but in that article, wages + super + tax on wages and super + money spent from wages = the economy, frankly I've never had a firm grasp on what 'the economy' is so it's nice to know for sure now

Yeah me too, it should be scaled to 0. 10% is still a huge cut though.

Rudd adds: “On assuming office Swan immediately began engaging in the national political debate, seeking to rekindle class warfare and remodelled himself as Australia’s answer to Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn.

“For a man who as treasurer sold out the mining companies on the mining tax, there is more than a whiff of hypocrisy on that score.

“Not to mention the fact that for the party to lead the nation, we must also bring large swathes of small business, the middle class and aspirational Australians with us.’’

If the media had just let Gillard govern, instead of shamelessly, partisanly and brazenly attacking her every day of her term, and never over the things that she deserved criticism for, like betraying LGBTIQA+ people, or loving over single parents, maybe we would be a world leader in renewable technologies, have a world class fibre network and still be in the top 3 economies in the OECD.

We would probably be in Swans second term and enjoying a gentle slide to the left while idiot Tony continues to ruin his own party from opposition.

The best part of that stupid trope is that this is actually the problem with Capitalism, as the tax base is erroded to nothing and the state fails.

Hey Moona!
Slippery Tilde

quote:

The 20th century’s failed experimentations with socialism serve as a strong lesson that, despite its idealistic promises of equality, the ideology has led to nothing but oppression and poverty.

However Australian Millennials have remained relatively unaffected by socialism’s shortcomings. The oldest were aged only nine when the Berlin wall fell, and the generation have lived through a period of unprecedented prosperity and growth.

CIS commissioned YouGov-Galaxy polling reveals that Australian Millennials’ limited exposure to the horrors of socialism may be causing them to romanticize the ideology. Nearly two-thirds of the group view socialism in a favorable light, with similar number believing that capitalism has failed and more government intervention is warranted. Furthermore, Millennials contend that the government has cut its spending on social services such as education and health – something our polling shows they strongly believe should be reversed.

These results suggest that Australia sits in a similar position to other countries such as the United Kingdom and United States, where the beliefs of Millennials are driving the youth vote in a leftward direction like never before.

With Millennials now making up a third of Australian voters, and almost 35% of the global workforce, it is important to understand how these beliefs might affect the nation into the future, and to ensure that we educate them on socialism’s role in some of the greatest catastrophes in human history.

Could this have anything to do with housing unaffordability, chronic underemployment, education which used to be free now costing tens of thousands of dollars, or watching capitalism corrupt our political processes and destroy the planet?
