Trump backing Pelosi is pretty smart and has no negative outcome. She will bend over to be bipartisan anyway while alienating some democratic congresspeople as a result. Makes her look like a quisling and seem illegitimate. She should be gotten rid of anyway, this fear of no one else is as good or their is no heir apparent is bullshit. Let someone learn the ropes and start to learn and whip now, while they only have one chamber, rather when she croaks or encounters a stiff wind.

Seriously, it's baffling that people keep saying she's the only one who can do it. Sure she might be great at the job but she sucks in a ton of other ways so I'm sure at least one of the two hundred some Democrats in the house can probably figure it out how to do an ok job of it.

Dems have been in the minority in the house for 8 years. Pelosi is a stale leader past her time, but losing 3 states by 70k votes is hardly her fault.

Whoever takes her place can't be a coastal Democrat.

She also hasn't been a congresswoman yet. She's going to need some experience working in an organization before she can actually lead a portion of it.

Pelosi is a highly effective speaker who's already promised to put members of the Progressive Caucus onto powerful and influential committees. The organized opposition to her from within the caucus is from her right, and the only other left-leaning members of the caucus who could do the job have already pledged to support Pelosi.

Being the head of a caucus is not an easy job. The spectrum of individual ideologies of Representatives ranges from Democratic Socialism to 'Almost-but-not-quite Republicans' and the Speaker's job is to keep all of them happy. If you want to see what an ineffective speaker looks like, just look at Paul Ryan—under his reign, the Republicans were unable to pass any signature legislation through the House other than tax cuts and Obamacare repeals, and squandered the first Republican-controlled unified government in a decade. By contrast, Pelosi was able to push through stimulus packages, healthcare reform, Dodd-Frank, cap and trade, and other major bills through the house, several of which couldn't even get through the Senate—and when in the minority, was able to hold her caucus to a relatively unified front.

However centrist you personally believe Pelosi to be doesn't matter. What matters is that she is highly effective at controlling her caucus, and will do everything in her power to enact the legislative promises of whoever ends up being the Democratic nominee in 2020. Does she support Medicare for All? Who knows! Will she support it if the nominee does? Abso-fuckin'-lutely, and she'll get it through the House because she is good at what she does. To get rid of her now is to discard a highly useful ally for a future Democratic President to have, all for the chance of nominating someone who's further to the left for a position where ideology is far less important than the ability to herd cats.

She won a tough primary campaign, yeah, but winning a general election in a competitive district is a whole different game.

Mississippi is having a special election to replace Thad Cochrane that's going to a runoff. In any other year, it would be a slam dunk for the GOP; however, the GOP candidate decided to casually laugh about public hangings and voter suppression while being filmed. Her comments aren't helped by the fact that her opponent is black. Dems are smelling blood in the water post-Alabama and are pouring money into the race because why the hell not.

It's pretty easy to understand,

-She's a millennial
-She's advocating for things that are very popular with millennial's
-Her unseating a boomer Dem political machine head speaks for itself
-She's living rent free in the right wing's head right now, and that's pretty impressive for someone who hasn't even been sworn in yet.

I don't think anyone reasonable thinks she's going to change things all on her own in her first term, but she's a pretty good representation of millennial's starting to become politically aware and active aside from just voting and volunteering.

tough is an understatement. seriously consider that crowley is not some long time seat holding shmuck; he had a warchest in the millions, in a seat that went uncontested for 14 years because no one dared go up against him, and he is seriously connected in nyc politics. AOC didnt win out of dumb luck, she put in serious hard work. and she did all this with the posterchild of a grassroots campaign.

i’m not saying she should be speaker of the house asap, but drat give the congresswoman some credit.

She's also protesting in Pelosi's office and backing primary challenges to blue dog dems, in addition to having live instragram fireside chats to everyone. She was a major (but not the only) factor in Pelosi offering all the justice dems seats on certain committees.

I mean she's pretty much doing everything that one person can do before being actually sworn in, and doing exactly what she promised people that she would do. I think this is the jarring factor to why people are having a cognitive disconnect (not anybody in this thread mind you, I mean like how the news is incapable of combating her)
