I honestly have no idea.

I mean it's possible that he just had it repo'd and is embarrassed about it.

Older stuff is just easy to steal. My mom had her old Buick Century stolen and they took it, broke the front seats so they leaned back farther, put speakers in the back window and smoked crack in it. Looked like it was just some kids having a great time with something easy to steal and dump it wherever when they were done.

It was really sad though, we had that car for like 10 years growing up and my mom cried when she saw it.

That's sad :(

Old cars are really easy to steal though. No steering wheel locks or any real security features. When it was running I was able to start my 88 300zx with a butter knife, pull the butter knife out and throw it in the floor of the passenger seat, and keep driving it no joke.

Somebody stole my 94 Escort LX when I was driving cross country in 2002 or so. They found it not even an hour later with the keys in it. Guess they wised up?

Edit: Yeah, I stupidly left the keys on the front seat while I was checking into a hotel.

Can't speak to the Fiesta specifically but Ford has been using a passive anti-theft system since at least the early 2000s. Shouldn't be able to start it without a key.

Of course, there's nothing stopping a resourceful auto thief from replacing the ECU with one that's been reprogrammed to bypass the immobilizer. What's perplexing is why someone would go through that much trouble for a loss-leader model.

That was my understanding: that apart from BMW and those with keyless, we'd long reached the point that you had to have a key.
Hence my curiosity

Very first question I asked was what model it was for that reason.
Police suggested that it was stripped for parts. I am a bit dubious as Ford stuff is plentiful and cheap anyway.

The only people who can tow or clamp a car are the govt and as it was in a private car park, it wasn't towed.

Ahh interesting.

Here is the United States of "get hosed" we hire felons to repo cars and they are legally allowed to basically take it from anywhere if they know where the car is parked.

We had a number of temp warehouse workers at my company a few months ago and I saw a repo-man pull into the (work) parking lot, attach the tow hitch simply by backing up towards the car, and drive off in a total of what was probably 20 seconds no joke.

Later I saw her go to her parking spot only to look down at her phone and call an uber.

I saw an old man coming out of the store with a single bottle of beer. The bottle fell out of the bag and smashed in the parking lot. Have you ever been so convinced you've just seen your future self that you think about it the rest of the day?

I'm going to start buying cans instead.

It wasnt that bad, after you left I got to help put out the fire!

I dropped a 12 pack of bottles right out the door of the packie one time but since I was a raging alcoholic at the time and went to that store every day they just laughed and gave me a new 12 pack. At the time I was happy but its actually kind of sad.

Actually, now I think about it, bailiffs (debt collectors) can seize and take your car away but they have to wait at least 2 hours before towing it to give you time to pay the debt

nm posted:

Ah right. I suppose it could happen but it's not something you hear happening much here. A car on a trailer would stick out like a sore thumb so it would be a risky theft.

Maybe there's some kind of OBD vulnerability they can exploit?

As for why, could be someone needing a load of panels that colour.

Common cars tend to be the most stolen. They just part out everything.
Normally, I expect them to be a touch older though as older cars tend to have more people looking for used parts (and tend to be easier to steal). Other than thefts for the purpose of committing another crime in the car or joyriding, most cars stolen are stolen for parts, not to resale whole.

This is probably like asking what's the one true religion, but I need a corn bread recipe and my friends from the south insist you can't use sugar, and all the recipes I see online have sugar in them. Thoughts and/or recipes? My friend who makes very good corn bread but is from California uses sugar, but it tastes good so I may just use his recipe.

Are you actually serving it to southerners or just sticking to their rules?

You simmer butter in a pan until the milk fat browns.

My wife makes sweet potato gnocchi with a sage-infused brown butter and the two combined are amazing.

So I know I threw a lot of doom and gloom around here earlier, and I just wanted to come and share some unrelated great news I got.

A few months back I was on the fast track to a paid firefighter position, and I ended up getting dropped by hr on the very last decision they could make. I'm known in a few different stations in that city, shared a bottle of bourbon with a couple chiefs when they got good news, etc.

Everyone was quite pissed at the decisions hr made, and have extended interviews to the select few they actually want to work with, including me. While kicking every poo poo to the curb that hr knew and pushed through regardless of the FD's say.

So yeah. A big boy job two days a week, so that I can still be home the majority of the time to help out. I'm stoked.

Use a bit of sugar in the cornbread regardless, it really wakes it up.
