True but at least American sports franchises haven't gone so far as to refuse to allow their players to play for national teams. Some have whined a bunch, but none that I'm aware have had successes.

National team competitions are way less of an issue for American sports.

If only Milliband had eaten a vegan sausage roll instead of a bacon sandwich, we wouldn't be in this mess.

UEFA changed the manner of assessment for Annex XI after it had been published, and after accounts had been released. City threatened to take UEFA to court over FFP (which, afterall, no longer had anything to do with stopping clubs going into administration, but was there to restrict anyone new breaking into top level football with investment). UEFA backed down and went for the voluntary settlement. It was public knowledge at the time that we were threatening to take UEFA to court, and had started proceedings.

There's nothing new in any of this if you were paying attention at the time.

Well they did that in a roundabout way. The league decided not to take a break for the Olympic s like they usually do. They never actually forbid the players from taking part, but leaving your club team in the lead up to the playoffs would have been an issue so nobody went.

Also the Olympics is set smack in the late season push of the premier league. The world cup is in the off season for most leagues.

Pretty sure Olympics are always July-August and never interfere with league schedules in Europe. Champions League always ends after domestic leagues and there's no way Barcelona would have let Messi play in the Olympics before the CL final.

The 2020 Olympics should really be in October like the 1964 games which I guess would have interfered with leagues if football was an Olympic sport back then.

I think his “usually it is” was in reference to the next World Cup being in the middle of the premier league season.

But Manchester isn't particularly fond of UEFA. For years, the team's fans, otherwise a rather quiet lot, have passionately booed their hearts out when the Champions League hymn is played. City fans feel that they and their team have been victimized by UEFA. In particular, the penalty the team was forced to pay in 2014 due to its violations of UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules was seen by fans as unfair.

Yet documents from the whistleblower platform Football Leaks reveal that UEFA actually showed Manchester City far too much lenience. The European football association was aware that it let City off the hook with a ludicrously low penalty, despite the club's far-reaching deception. What UEFA didn't know, however, was the vast extent of Manchester's deceit -- mendacity that began the moment in 2008 when Sheikh Mansour purchased the club.

I'm not going to defend the financial poo poo, but the booing has as much to do with how poo poo UEFA have been about punishing racial abuse and other ridiculous nonsense.

For instance, fans take badly to being banned from a stadium because the other side has been persistently racist, who then actually get to sneak their own fans in and receive no punishment and in fact have their stadium ban reduced subsequently.

Hell if they actually gave a poo poo about racist fans Russia should have been disqualified for even bidding on the world cup.

I literally gave dexamethasone to at least 15 people today. It’s just a steroid. It will temporarily cure your sniffles and makes some people shaky and twitchy. Might drive up your blood sugar a bit too.

Edit to clarify: corticosteroid, not like anabolic roids
