I’ve only seen video of it, but there’s an old Japanese city builder series that basically has a lot of political and detailed stuff. It’s a city builder set on a space colony (the kind that’s a city in a space station) and is themed around Japanese city politics, I think? It’s real neat but it’s probably a slog to play by modern standards. From what I understand you also get to control some real fine details about how the space colony is run, too, like scheduling spaceflights to Earth/the moon, and even set artificial day/night and weather schedules(?) https://youtu.be/CzPVtd3MzMc https://youtu.be/5dEVar8E3Ro

The Cheshire Cat posted:Yeah but that's typical "seedy underbelly" stuff. It's quite a lot different when you claim that real world, modern day genocides are actually being guided by your fictional magical people who are the protagonists of your setting. I just read the book on Montreal, calling it seedy underbelly stuff is a laughable understatement. Also, it's canon that Himmler became a member of the Clan Tremere at the end of the war. White Wolf has always been like this.

I thought vampires keep out of human affairs? I don't think Himmler could've resisted the temptation to turn as much of the army as he could into hard to kill blood mages.

I think the issue is less "weird, alternate contemporary history" which is completely fair as a form of fiction even when done badly and more "the nuWW guys have been dogwhistling weird reactionary politics for quite a while." I mean, even as a LGBT fellow, what bothered me about this whole Chechnya business is not the fact that the purges are mentioned, or that they are minimized because there's a Secret Occult Conspiracy, but the feeling that the whole thing was a weird islamophobic pot shot using LGBT people as ammunition. Vampires are supposed to be above all this crap except for silly neonates which is the tone old Vampire books took when talking about real life religion/politics. Now, to bring it more back on topic, I think this is an excellent opportunity for the Paradox Dev Studio to get their mitts on White Wolf stuff and incorporate it in their games. The Dark Ages expansion pack with a whole "night map mode" almost writes itself

Like the Eve people wanted to make an MMO with the setting and when that didn't pan out they sold them off, so they clearly had fairly solid intentions for the property when they picked it up. It seems like Paradox... doesn't really. Even though some kind of CK-esque vampire game where you play the as a vampire dealing with the various machinations of WoD city politics could be really interesting, I don't know if they actually have any plans for Paradox Interactive with the White Wolf stuff at all.

After having owned Victoria 2 for a while and buying all the DLC for it in this last sale, I finally want to give it a go. I popped in as Texas and that already had me in some poo poo. Is there a good recommended country I can pick that will let me play around peacefully and watch the world burn elsewhere? I don't imagine starting at war is good for a first game.

I've spent hundreds of hours across HOI4, EU4, CK2, and Stellaris... Victoria 2's interface seemed way more alien than I figured it would be. Though that makes sense, because the mechanics guiding the game are different and that is pretty exciting.

You don't immediately start at #1 like with Britain but you're so strong that the conflicts you'll encounter you will almost certainly win, so it has a nice satisfying progression going form Prussia -> Germany without actually being too challenging to do.

I actually don't like Prussia as a starter country because up until you defeat AH in the Brothers' War, micromanaging influence is important, and if you're don't know what you're doing and don't pick up on the system for a while it can cause you big headaches later when you're trying to unify Germany any way other than the Gutter Crown. I think Brazil is a better choice.

Brazil's also a great starting nation for HoI. You've got enough industrial capacity to build a couple things at once, but without getting overwhelmed by choices; you've got the oceans between you and Europe, but you've got coasts so you can get your happy selves over to Britain to help out when it's time for D-Day. Plus, if someone tries to declare on you unexpectedly, the US'll kick 'em in the dick.

brazil in HOI4 requires you to make your own fun because it's absolutely lacking in any prompt to actually do anything beyond vaguely continuing to exist. that's a problem with ROTW countries in general in HOI, and even some of the expansion content (canada, australia) has serious problems with it.

even that isn't very interesting because of how passive everyone is. unless you accidentally push someone into the allies, nobody in south or central america will show much concern about the rise of brazilian fascism or the fact that you conquered all of their neighbors on a thin pretext.

In my experience they end up joining the allies pretty quickly even without the US guarantees, especially if you're really ramping up world tension by justifying war goals on Brazil as Argentina. But it isn't all that thrilling to play since South America either turns into a slog if you wait too long or it's a walk in the park if you attack early. It is however a good lesson on fighting in rough terrain, ie use overwhelming air power and naval invasions rather than grinding your armies into the jungles and mountains. There is something nice though about bludgeoning your way through Panama up into Mexico and then invading the US.

The US does get a focus that allows them to intervene in wars between American countries, and once they pick that they will not hesitate to do so. But if you're quick or lucky you can get most of South America conquered before you have to deal with them.
