So yeah, the Cruze is what they made here. But GM has been telegraphing this for almost 2 years. 2 years ago they had 4,500 workers on 3 shifts and since then they've eliminated 2 shifts and were down to less than 1,500 workers.

But yeah, the bigger blow will be the businesses that feed off of the GM plant, the trucking companies, tooling companies, etc.

Do you feel the same way?

Forgive me for the simplistic question, but how attributable is this to the tariffs?

Probably very minimally (but not nothing). It's mostly due to America's car-buying habits leaning more towards trucks, SUVs, and crossovers and GM's failure to see that and plan accordingly.

Kinda

Smaller cars have a much smaller profit margin than things like SUVs and trucks, so they get hit a lot harder by the tariffs. And since everyone has forgotten that gas can get expensive, people are buying huge things again instead of smaller cars.

People are mostly buying crossovers, and the difference in gas mileage between a Chevy Cruze (28/38) and a Chevy Equinox (26/32) is not big.

I remember when I thought the Volt was the way of the future for cars in America. It deserves some recognition for being one of the first plug-in hybrids and I'm sad about this because I was planning on getting a Volt for my next car as I already have a Cruze and love it.

With Ford already cutting all it's small cars it's going to be hilarious when the economy tanks and gas prices go up and all the US automakers are dead like in 2008 because they gambled too much on big cars.

Well at least they're keeping the Bolt which is like the next logical step from the Volt anyway. Not that anyone is buying that either, though.

It's best to not believe GM when they blame Trump's trade war for this. It's an easy scapegoat but like I said, this has been in the works for years. That's not to say that trade wars are good or anything, just that it had little affect on today's GM announcement. I guess maybe it could have sped up their timeline, but that's about it.

It's just hard for people around here to stomach this poo poo from GM when they announce a new crossover like the Chevy Blazer and that it's gonna be built in Mexico.

I know the realities of the situation and why GM is doing what they're doing, but the realities of what a plant closing does to a community doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

I mean, I sorta get the red forest. You have a long hallway. You put up trees. Oh, you have to be different and can't just have a tree that looks like a tree because you're so special.

But like... where the gently caress did the pencil wreath come from?

I half expect to hear some bullshit story that Baron made it in art class. Like there was some crystal soccer ball ornament in one of those shots and I was thinking "Oh, that's the Trump idea of a kid's ornament, right?"
