I don't blame Weaver for having the attitude of "I'm not really interested in doing a bunch of identical slasher sequels, if we're doing this lets make sure there's something new and interesting about it", because she really did not need the work or the money, and she was 100% correct that her name was what was being sold to the studio. They were not going to go ahead without her involved(at least after the success of Aliens).

So I dunno, if it were me and I was being approached to do work that I really didn't need or even want, I'd lay out some conditions too. Like, ok as long as I'm doing this I may as well use the leverage I have to make sure it's something I can look back on and say I did my best to make it good. Weaver had a good career going, it's understandable that she didn't want to be known as someone who put out lovely monster movie sequels every few years.

I have a confession to make. And as a big time Alien franchise fan...the Alien 3 AC Blu-Ray edition or whatever the hell it is now. Glad I got that statement out of my chest.

Wow, what a difference it did to the movie. If they just fixed up the CGI parts a little bit...

The only CGI in the movie are the cracks on the Alien’s head before it explodes. :eng101:

You’re probably thinking of the rod puppet. The Blu-ray does clean that up a little bit compared to the DVD release, but it’s still janky.

It's the compositing of the puppet into the background that was always the problem. It felt like those old-school matte lines from pre-Special Edition Star Wars, which doesn't really fly in 1992.

I've tried so, so hard to like Alien 3 but even the workprint or whatever it's called didn't do it for me.

It's odd, I really dislike Alien 3 but I never hear the main reasons I do being brought up: The characters. I really dislike Bishop/Hicks/Newt not being in the movie, like a lot, given the situation. Killing them before the credits hit the movie hard; but beyond that, the prisoners are just awful characters, not a single one realistic of fleshed out or memorable.

The scene that I will always remember when I watched this movie as the moment two prisoners are fleeing a loving xenomorph, then smash into each other. OK that was kind of funny but.. then they get up and start joking. Joking and joking and acting like loving idiots; a xenomorph was right behind them. It, of course, kills them. That was so loving bad it wasn't even out of a Friday the 13th movie.. it was out of a Halloween sequel. One of the really bad ones. With Ice Cube.

Plus the fact the sheer numbers made the whole movie hilariously stupid. They had to go out of their way to kill themselves there were so many prisoners in their stupid attempts to kill the xenomorph. Seriously if their plan was "Everybody get a loving pipe and stay in a common area" I'm pretty sure the Alien would have gotten a prison yard beat down in the first 30 minutes.

That said I loved the soundtrack, for what it was.

ED: I also hold no ill will against Fincher. He may hate that movie more than anyone. It pretty clearly wasn't his fault.

It's hard to disagree with that without getting into the whole "I wish they'd just made a completely different movie than the one we got" thing, which I try to avoid. Because there's really no place for Newt and Hicks in the nihilistic ultra-downer movie that they were going for.

Honestly I’m just annoyed at people saying the same poo poo over and over. It’s been almost 27 years since it came out. Can we get over it already? If you’re really that bent out of shape over it, play that trash game where hicks is actually alive and sounds so bored the whole time because deep down he wants to be dead.

After Halloween I’d be curious of a “what if alien 3 didn’t happen” movie, but I also don’t want these people to get what they want because I am a spiteful person at heart. :v:

Hicks and Newt survived in the original ‘Aliens’ sequel comics, and Ripley is nowhere to be found (at least until volume 3).
The narrative makes it work - Hicks has mental and physical scars from his ordeal and has some bad PTSD, but gets roped back into things similarly to how Ripley was in ‘Aliens’. Newt gravitates Hicks as a father figure because she has nowhere else to go, and Ripley is just... gone.

Oh, well, that's all water under the bridge, as I always say. Water under the bridge!

The alien franchise is representative of its titular antagonist in that it's an ever changing, ever evolving entity. And like that entity it is ruthless. Killing off Hicks and Newt was a ballsy play, but one that serves an evolving conceptual purpose.

By cutting Ripley off of anyone she cared about, and placing her in a hostile environment - devoid of even her own gender! - and making her this insane outsider, she effectively becomes an alien as well, in the truest sense of the words. She doesn't belong. She has knowledge beyond the understanding of those she's surrounding with. And, fittingly, it is only by the actions of another alien that she ultimately perishes.

Alien3 isn't about resetting some kind of slasher status quo to return to the tone of the first film, it's about refocusing on the idea of what "alien" even means. Both for the lead, and the audience.

Very much agreed, and that's why I have no problem with Hicks and Newt dying after Aliens. I like conceptualizing the trilogy with Ripley as a Sisyphus-type character, matched up against something she can never overcome.

Alien 3's total disregard for anything in the second film is what is ballsy about it. In addition to what you mentioned about the death of Hicks/Newt, the hostile environment devoid of her own gender, killing her at the end, etc., they even turned the good robot from Aliens into an evil company man. It couldn't be further from how sequels are made today.

And Alien 3 should be commended for preventing the Alien series from becoming yet another action blockbuster franchise.

It eventually had an engineer or something showing up to help exterminate them from Earth. That turned into a trap after he helped with that too.

The comics were weird but some of the scenes had some fantastic payoff, like the jackass military commander being betrayed by the queen once they made it to Earth.

It was Ridley Scott’s intent, but I don’t buy it. ‘Alien’ shows us a very old Derelict full of Alien eggs, which would predate David.

According to one of the people involved in the cancelled sequel to Covenant, Ridley was going to make the next film about Engineers chasing David for revenge after returning to their home planet and seeing what he'd done and the movie would end with the ship full of eggs crashing on LV421 and connecting the film to Alien directly. There's a high likelihood that it would have been just as bad if not worse than Covenant.

Yeah. 20th Century Fox just filed a trademark application for a new game called Alien: Blackout and a brand new development studio of theirs announced that they were making an Alien game back in January. There's a good chance it will get announced next week at the game awards.
