lynch_69 posted:A lot of people are genuinely incapable of surviving in the increasingly cut-throat capitalist world we inhabit, whether they realize it or not. Voting Turbo-Hitler or putting even more Guatemalan immigrants in concentration camps aren't going to bring back coal mining or factory jobs back. Short of implementing universal basic income and other generous socialist policies large swathes of the population are hosed forever. Well, the third option is to move to heavily regulated capitalism. Which, honestly, I'm okay with. Not "second amendment well-regulated", but, you get 5% markup on your prescription drug. Period. Oh, you were charging too much in overdraft fees? You now can no longer charge them, or anything else to make up for that lost revenue. Your food poisoned a few hundred people? You have a few million in fines, have to cover all those peoples medical costs for life, and now you have 5 FDA employees you have to pay out your own pocket to work out of offices on-site for the next 10 years.

Except this line of argument gets proven wrong pretty consistently, the crimes that occur tend to very much spring from simple opportunities, so removing the simple opportunities does a lot. The signalling alone is valuable, society indicating that some of the gun fantasies these people have are actually off-limits. Really pretty much anyone can also get the raw material and learn the skills necessary to build an excellent fully automatic rifle from scratch, but as it'd take a decade of effort they are likely to have lost interest in the goings-on in the synagogue across the street before they are done.

I can't find it now, but there was an article going around a day or two ago pointing out how the rural suicide rate is double the urban suicide rate, which might sound like the opening for a normal "rural areas are wastelands of despair" story, but the kicker was that once they controlled for gun access, the suicide rate was actually about the same. It's crazy just how much violence, either against oneself or against others, is prevented just by putting up even a small barrier to access.

Harvard grad student told to move out after roommates find her legally owned firearms 'uncomfortable' Roommates knew this girl had a MAGA hat, searched her room and found legally owned guns, and are now forcing her out of the apartment. The landlord agreed, warning her that if she doesn’t leave but the other roommates do leave, she would be responsible for all of the rent.
