I'm mad at NDT for digging his own grave with that indian handshake bullshit or saying he was just looking for Uranus under her dress when literally all he needed to say was "I'm sorry." It's kind of a problem when any criticism of a public figure is treated as "rabid" or trying to ruin someone's life. That's how Kavanaugh got on the SC.

I knew an Army dentist who worked at Benning in-processing the recruits and he had some absolute horror stories of kids from the sticks getting their first dental checkups ever. There was a regular process down for getting them fitted out with dentures while still keeping to their drill dates. Had at least one case where the 18 year old kid only had weeks to maybe months to live given the severity of the untreated abscesses (plural) boring towards his brain cavity. He honestly preferred it to private practice since he could just concentrate on providing actual care and not worry about having to sell housewives on dental cosmetics to cover the insurance costs.

I dont know, I can understand someone in a situation where they came across as creepy unintentionally (and didnt know about it for years in some case), or being falsely accused of something, wanting to explain their side of the story. That seems like a completely normal reaction to me, and nerdy guys unintentionally coming across as creepy is so common it's cliche. I honestly didnt find anything wrong with his statement, in the context that he is a huge nerd.

He can try to explain it all he wants, it doesn't make it appropriate behavior though. Also I'm a huge loving nerd and I agonize constantly about my behavior around other people, especially women, so I don't think that's a good excuse.

IIRC Spanish Flu was called that because they were basically the only ones that reported it. It haopened right after WWI and what great news to tell everyone who suffered casualties for years already. Other countries were absolutely affected by it. The reason it was so deadly, again iirc, was that it was a different type. Basically, the first flu we get kinda imprints a "how to kill flu!" Thing for your immune system. Problem is that flu isnt a one-type virus, it has multiple. See H1N1. So the body struggles against different viruses like H1N9 or some poo poo. Sometimes it is really bad. So if you have the "how to kill this virus" guide book, great! If not, uh oh. The people that mainly died during the Spanish Flu were our age. People that were in the sweet spot between the old enough to have gotten a type of flu like the one ripping a part that area, or young enough to have their body "make a guide about how to kill the flu." Everyone else who already had a flu "guidebook" obviously didnt have their book work and they lost their lives sometimes. poo poo was wild reading about but its been years.

FAUXTON posted:Was this why people in the young-n-healthy age bracket had that autoimmune response that destroyed their lungs? A mixture of that and if you're immunocompromised like children and elderly, your body simply can't muster up the autoimmune response that kills you. So you just get the flu. If your immune system is functioning normally, your body freaks the gently caress out and throws everything at your lungs--this just spirals into a higher fever and more inflammation until either the flu dies or you do.

There is zero reason any of this raping/drugging accusation should be tried in the court of public opinion. It should be criminally investigated. By the cops. And if there’s truth to the accusations then they can prosecute and convict him. Accepting either persons story over the others is... Problematic. At best. It can become something much uglier pretty fast from there.

mlmp08 posted:Are you defensive of NgDT in particular or do you assume women generally are liars and try to ruin lots of men? This situation in particular feels like bullshit. So far the credible stories are that he was a little creepy touching a woman's shoulder, and a woman thought he hit on her. This is news. Yeah, I'm a fan of NDT. I listen to his podcast, where he CONSTANTLY features successful women in a wide variety of STEM fields and other careers, champions letting girls ask questions/get curious/think critically instead of shoehorning them into "traditional" roles. The idea that he's a serial predator just doesn't fit with the persona that the guy has put on display for the past couple of decades. Can someone pull off a lie like that? Absolutely - Cosby did it. But those stories started off far worse than these. And once they gained traction, they came flowing out of the shadows rapidly. That's not happening here. All we have are a couple of weird moments and one dubious claim. If we start seeing credible complaints (like with Cosby and Kavanaugh) then I'm certainly not going to defend against them. I'm a big fan of actually investigating this poo poo when these complaints are made. But the first two...I don't know what there is to investigate. His explanation sounds reasonable, and lines up pretty well with the original stories I saw about it. The other one...if someone thinks there's enough credence there to investigate, ok. If they actually FIND something, ok. I don't think that's how it would shake out, but I'm not willing to bet my paycheck on it.

More than a day, but certainly within 7-10.

NDT deserves extra scrutiny because of his role as an ambassador of science. You can't attract women to STEM fields and then say "watch out for this guy, he's a little handsy, but he's a nerd so it's OK".

Not that I think NdT is necessarily a rapist but "he's such an outspoken champion of race and women" is exactly what people said about Aziz Ansari before we found out he was rapey as hell Also "it's ok that he makes women uncomfortable until he apologizes a decade later because he also supports women!" isn't very convincing. You're putting the burden on women to suck it up and deal with dudes who don't know personal boundaries because it's what's best for their gender. Again I don't think he's actually a rapist but that he "well actually"d his response forces people to make the stance of "it's ok he skeeved out some women unintentionallh because he's an ambassador for women" This could have been a major teaching moment where he just said something like "I apologize to all the women who I have made uncomfortable unknowingly. I have never had any ill intentions towards any of them and I am deeply sorry I made them feel afraid for their safety when someone in my position and goals should be striving to be a protective influence for women. As a man of science this is an incredibly humbling and painful sign that I still have much to learn about myself and those around me. So I will strive to do better and make sure I don't make anyone feel uncomfortable around me again." yadda yadda ya something like that
