ARC is useful if you have anything running on the TV directly (like an app, or something going into another input).

It’s good when CEC doesn’t work from the word go though, as it means you won’t get the frustration when it stops working for no apparent reason.

The x810c has android and it's slow and lovely so yeah, no direct use of apps. And I have the hub so CEC isn't an issue. I'm just spoiled by the bedroom tv turning off and on from holding the TV button. It's not that big of a deal, just kind of annoying.

If you hated the remote like I did:

This poo poo changed the game in my house. We used to have to have multiple remotes for various things, now we only need one. I got it a year ago or so, still works without changing battery-- not a single complaint.

It also gives the remote a little bit more heft so you don't feel like you're slinging around a baseball card. But most importantly, it attaches to a single side which means when you pick up the ATV remote you never have to flip it around because you picked it up upside down which was ANNOYING.

I tried this last year, and for some reason (which I can't remember, but maybe the TV doesn't use IR?) I couldn't get this to work with my TV. So double check if you have a newer TV.

The Samsung smart remote that comes with the TV does control AppleTV. Still I don't use it, because it gets confused (or I do) if the button I am pushing is for the TV or AppleTV. Also the AppleTV remote does work great with my TV. The receiver and TV both come on when I hit any button to wake the AppleTV. The only real bitch is when I am on another input and I dumbly use the AppleTV remote to change the volume, which causes the input to switch back to AppleTV.

Lipstick Apathy
Having an issue with PSVue on the 4k AppleTV, wondering if someone can help narrow it down to device, setup, app, ISP, whatever.

Watching something DVR'd in the app is close to nonfunctional if I'm trying to skip commercials as an example. I'll get desynced audio/video, video running at 3x speed for a minute or two, double audio (from different times, but overlaid), and maybe 5% of the time on a "skip forward 10 seconds" command the stream will just skip to a random point in the broadcast (usually the same point, last night it was like 4 minutes from the start of the stream...from anywhere in the stream).

This is after I've jumped through the hoops of how the Siri remote trackpad interacts with the app, which seems laggy as hell and often inputs are recognized as two different types. For instance, click on the right of the trackpad is supposed to skip forward 10 seconds...half the time that's detected as a click the right edge AND click in the center, which brings up another function in PSVue which is "GO TO LAST CHANNEL" and a second trackpad center click goes to that channel. So between the lag and the garbage input detection, clicking 10-12 times to skip a commercial break is sort of russian roulette where maybe clicks 5 and 6 get detected as center clicks rather than edge clicks and whoops you're on some other channel now.

I've fixed the remote issue by using the Apple TV remote app on the phone, which has dedicated +10s / -10s buttons, but the streaming behavior is the same, so I know it's not limited to me fat fingering the remote.

Anyhow, all we watch on the PSVue are sports and it's making it almost non-functional to watch football or the goddamn world series so before I hop on the "call VUE, get directed to Apple, get directed to FIOS" train figured I'd see if people have had this problem or if there's a good way to isolate this.

It may just be a bug with the current version of the app. I assume you’ve already tried deleting and re-downloading the app. Might just have to wait for a new version to fix the bugs.

It’s the app.

If there is an issue it’s almost always the app.

I had terrible luck with PSView and moved on to DTVnow which seems to work “better”

My ATV seems to hate going to sleep. About every time i put it to sleep, it wakes up few seconds later and also wakes up the tv. I googled the issue and have shut down airplay, app updates etc but it keeps doing it. I’m getting pretty close to disabling CEC to get rid of this. Today it did this three times before the tv stayed off.

Yeah, CEC has been at times extremely underwhelming or unworkable for me. I got it to mostly work right then I discovered my TV was only passing 2CH audio via ARC to my Dennon. I finally gave up, re-routed the HDMI cables and just use my Harmony Hub.

My ATV has been buggy lately too. It used to go to sleep immediately (the white LED light turned off immediately) when I told it to sleep. Now it turns the TV off, but the white LED stays on for hours. It's kind of annoying, but not annoying as the ATV randomly deciding to quit to the home screen every now and then. I'm not talking about the thing where it asks if I'm still watching. I'll be watching something and then without warning the ATV quits the app, goes to the home screen, and shows a notification saying "the remote has connected" or something like that. It does this randomly and no I'm not touching the remote at all, it's sitting on the coffee table and I don't have a cat or anything that would play with it either. I haven't changed any settings except letting the ATV autoupdate.

Right, okay. Some Googling suggests it could work via peer-to-peer wifi or something? And it establishes the initial connection via Bluetooth?

Yeah, here we go, iOS 8: https://www.cultofmac.com/282209/airplay-longer-requires-wi-fi-network-ios-8/

It's wifi-based but not reliant on the devices being on the same network. I guess it's point to point or creates an ad hoc network? Who knows.

I recently bought my parents one of the $149 refurb ATV 4K's (after getting one myself last month) and my only gripe is the single siri remote support. Fortunately, the old silver remotes still work perfectly (except volume of course) and you can pair a bunch of them to these new units.

I also gave up on CEC as well, as the ATV would never turn off and I didn't really care for it anyway. I also made the suggested settings here and everything is working great. The volume on the siri remote also worked perfectly with my Yamaha RX-V479 receiver right out of the box with no pairing even necessary.

I have that same receiver. Love it and CEC works like 90%. Whenever I start watching something, 10 secs later the audio input will change to something else, while the video input stays the same. I have to hit the menu button on the ATV remote before it kicks the audio back to ATV. It’s super loving weird.

I think I worked it out, that ancient Apple TV needs to be upgraded from iOS 7 to at least iOS 8. It’s a bit tricky because I don’t have physical access and it’s plugged in via Ethernet (with no internet access) so I can’t hotspot it.

Tricky but I’ll work it out.

I don't have that issue (yet). This is more for the AVS thread but it's ATV related anyway - I decided to experiment some more this weekend. After hooking up all the HDMI inputs to the Sony 55" 2016 930D instead of the RX-V479 (since it wasn't passing through the HDR anyway) and playing around again with the Bravia Sync on the TV , I get full functionality and if I use an HDMI cable back to the ARC (using AV4) on the Yamaha 479 instead of an Optical audio cable, I get better audio quality. This ONLY works if you have the Bravia Sync activated (MEH), and of course, the ATV won't go to sleep again (set at 15 min otherwise) unless you force it to. I can't tell if it's the TV or the 479's fault but I do notice that the TV and Receiver both "wake up" every hour or so despite all the settings I can find telling it not to.

Based on that (and some other Yamaha 479 annoyances) I'm probably gonna dump it and get a Sony STRDN1080 ($600) next year and upgrade to 7.2 and hope it gets along better with the TV, which of course it won't and then I'll be annoyed some more and..........:argh:

I love the ATV 4k though and may pick up yet another $149 refurb for the bedroom tv still using a "crusty old and slow" ATV 3.

Yep, just be aware that a new major version is right around the corner ("early next year"), which will be a separate purchase if you bought Pro 5 outright. Consider doing a month or whatever in the IAP version for (I think) $1 to see if it works for you, or you can try it without paying with reduced codec support.

Infuse is great. I wanted to watch SMB shares on my Apple TV but VLC only works with SMB1 right now which got deactivated on Windows 10 for security reasons. So for now I’m paying 99cents a month for infuse until the VLC team gets their poo poo together and supports SMB2/3.

What is the best way to watch your own movies AND see pictures on an AppleTV nowadays?

I currently have my PC sharing the HDD over my network via SMB which is accessed via Infuse on my devices-- didn't need Pro. It works but it's pretty jank and you can't see pictures.

I was thinking it would be a good idea to shove all my poo poo into a cloud storage option somehow, but since some of the things on there are homemade porn I'd be violating various TOS rules, even if they go unenforced.

Plex rolled out new experimental players to iOS and tvOS this week.

They ditch the native video player for their own custom one which allows for a wider range of supported file types.

It’s only available for Plex Pass users but it’s seems to work well. Less time to skip around, plays quicker, etc.
