ding's the king.

Trump’s Shallow Sympathies
The president’s self-absorption and unease with death and suffering make him ill-suited for the consoling role demanded of him.

quote:

Still, the president’s remarks to reporters in Argentina, where he was traveling for the G20 summit, were peculiar. “He was a very fine man. I met him on a number of occasions,” Trump said. “He was a terrific guy and he’ll be missed. He lived a full life and an exemplary life.”

The idea that Trump having “met him on a number of occasions” was germane exemplifies the president’s strange approach to condolences. Despite these encounters, Trump couldn’t come up with anything beyond vague generalities to say about Bush. This reflects Trump’s disinterest in politics before his own entry, his strained relationship with the political establishment, his absorption and lack of interest in other people, and his apparent unease with death and the role of comforting in general.

The suggestion that having met Trump was a notable characteristic of Bush recalls the president’s reaction upon the death of Aretha Franklin:

I want to begin today by expressing my condolences to the family of a person I knew well. She worked for me on numerous occasions. She was terrific—Aretha Franklin—on her passing. She brought joy to millions of lives and her extraordinary legacy will thrive and inspire many generations to come. She was given a great gift from God, her voice, and she used to well. People loved Aretha. She was a special woman. So just want to pass on my warmest best wishes and sympathies to her family.

The second sentence raised hackles. Trump had hired Franklin to perform at his casinos, it turned out, but foregrounding the fact that she had “worked for” him seemed to both subjugate her and downplay her work. (Barack Obama, by contrast, praised Franklin’s presence as “a glimpse of the divine.”)

Trump, ever self-centered, seems unable to imagine that there is anything more relevant than being graced by his own presence. But like many acts of self-aggrandizement, this one arguably betrays insecurity. Trump is a world-champion name-dropper, seeking to elevate himself with connections to other famous people. The funny thing about this is that he is the president of the United States, a concept he seems not to fully grasp nearly two years in. There’s no one more famous than him! Besides, it’s hardly surprising that the president would have met former presidents.

Why were you peeved at Bernie at the end of the process

Legitimate reasons: He was mathematically eliminated after NY, but continued. The Dem primary was not rigged but he contributed to that narrative. He didn't support Clinton the way Clinton supported Obama after her loss.

I recognize that Clinton hung on too long in 2008 and also contributed to some pretty poo poo and unfair attacks against Obama before she made the about face. This isn't about aggrandizing Clinton. She is bad. Obama is bad. Bernie is bad. All people and especially all politicians are bad.

But the right is the worst, and the only way to beat them is for a liberal/left alliance until they are ground into dust. I'll be angry at any leftist who doesn't support a liberal, and I'll be even angrier at any liberal who doesn't support a leftist. I guess I'm just really peeved that it's been so one sided for so long but even the loving spectre of a Sanders nomination is enough for Clinton voters to go "Well 4 more years of Trump won't be so bad" and it's like, dammit, this is the exact poo poo we got mad at when some Sanders supporters said they were staying home. But, I guess the truth is that:

It's not a statement of fact, it's a statement of belief. Their opposition to Bernie needs to be justified, so they're rationalizing it with a false narrative that he didn't sufficiently support her candidacy (he did). It's the Hillary can never fail, she can only be failed line.

Yea Bernie did a great job supporting Hilary after the primary was over. They have to justify that Hillary ran one of the worst, badly mismanaged campaigns in modern American history, and didn't even campaign in battleground states till the numbers were shown to be tightening.

Hillary's campaign should be our eternal lesson of what not to do. It's totally all Bernie's fault though

Qualified is code for "i have no reason to run but I've been around a while and I've got this resume of jobs." It's absolutely uninspiring except to the most brain rotten political wonks. Biden has literally nothing to offer as a candidate.

I'm not looking forward to the endless "ONLY BIDEN HAS THE EXPERIENCE TO BEAT TRUMP BY RETURNING CIVILITY TO POLITICS" being drummed through the primary and then all the idiot pundits wondering why he's polling like poo poo and Trump somehow is looking more and more inevitable.

Joe can go gently caress himself. If he actually gave half a poo poo about the country he'd dick off and enjoy his last years with his money but like Clinton he wants that line in the history books too much not too risk a fascist presidency. Voting for Biden is asking for a huge Republican wave since he has no answers other than loving people over with austerity and debt.

Maybe he did. It didn't feel like it at the time, but I was pissy because I backed Clinton and I thought Sanders was unfair. The perception may be colored by how bad the fight seemed at the time. The point is I'm not really a huge fan of Bernie the guy, although I've moved over to his positions on the issues, and I'd have supported him in 2016 if he won and I will support him in 2020 if he wins.

I take "blue no matter who" seriously and it's seriously infuriating to see someone in the professional class walk that back the minute it might mean a 5% tax increase for them. It has to go both ways if it's going to work at all.

A Republican being "unqualified" is much better than one who is since it's a lot harder for the press to paper over their awfulness like they are currently doing with the Bushes.

"Qualified" in the way these people are talking about just means you meet the approval of the DC/NY political establishment. They were desperate to dub Trump qualified for the most basic of human actions so no one should give a poo poo what these gate keepers think about anything.
