I wouldn't be shocked to see a rash of issues like that related to tumblr because of the moronic ways they're defining "adult content". The system is automated and flagging posts as "adult" that are absolutely not even remotely adult. Like pictures of deserts, or anything critical of Tumblr. Most hilariously is a post that's just a screenshot of tumblr's stock price taking a massive poo poo when they announced it. Everyone who reblogs it gets the little message that it was flagged. It's a glorious trash fire, but there are also nonzero people whose actual income comes from selling whatever imagery on there who are gonna be hosed.

Also you really don't "let" a teenager do anything on the internet. That is always and forever a losing battle.

16 year olds can drive literal cars to places you can't monitor. People who can drive cars are adults in everything but the difference between which jail they'll go to if they kill someone while doing it. Perhaps you should stop snooping in their internet use at this point.

If there's creepy guys on the internet perhaps the real solution is to stop letting guys grow up to be creeps.

So yeah, you can go gently caress yourself for that one buddy.

Yeah, that was in poor taste.

How is the ex wife blaming the kid? Saying that it's likely for attention? I agree with the sentiment above that attention is likely something she does actually need at this time. If she's really as reclusive as you stated, how much faith do you have in the father having a comprehensive understanding of the troubles she's going through. How did you/they come to the tumbler being the last straw conclusion?

From the sounds of it this is going to be a difficult time for that family, and while likely that the ex is a terrible person, I doubt she'd genuinely want to do/say anything that'll hurt her daughter. Maybe I'm wrong though.

All the information I have comes from the broken and possibly drunken texts he is sending. His girlfriend is in NC for work so he's dealing with this alone.

"***** says she does this poo poo all the time for attention" - which makes me think maybe his daughter has been cutting herself?

I doubt he is 100% aware of his daughters problems and struggles, he works 2nd shift so he only sees her a little each day when she stays with him. I've made it very clear he can come stay with us so he doesn't have to be alone but he's declined. He wasn't even aware what tumblr was until recently.

On the bad rebranding side, Samsung laser printers are rebadged HP, and the drivers are the absolute clusterfuck you'd immediately think of when combining HP and Samsung. Avoid both.

Well you're wrong obviously, because 16 is legally a child whether you agree with it or not.

Also I was under the impression the parents were actively allowing her selling porn drawings on Tumblr, which if that's the case is bad parenting, but from what Rhyno is saying it sounds like the Mother is the one allowing it. If dad isn't around much it's hard to know exactly what's going on so i can see why he would be freaking out.

If you're the parent of a 16 year old and do not monitor them to some degree, you're doing parenting wrong. They are legally your responsibility, and morally/ethically your responsibility, too. If you're allowing a side-Tumblr hustle to continue from your 16 year old girl, there is a problem.

These things shouldn't be hard to understand.

No, that's how people grow up to be adults because they can apply the understanding of responsibility and trust that operating a car entails to other ventures instead of having their parents run in to "help" them with all their important decisionmaking as they reach adult maturity.

So because they can drive they should be treated like an adult? lol when I and every friend I had got our licenses it gave us more freedom to gently caress off and get into more trouble than we were already getting into. We've all told stories here in this thread about it before.

Do some research about brain development, specifically the frontal lobe. A teens brain isn't fully developed and won't be until their mid 20's, as a result their judgement skills are poo poo. No wonder it's an issue for parents.

This world isn't what it was 30 years ago. Giving a teenager unfettered access to the internet with zero oversight is reckless, but if you don't have kids, I can understand a lack of comprehension. It really does change your perspective.

Ether Frenzy posted:

Sorry I think weird patriarchal thoughts about other people's nearly-grown daughters is "a bad thing".

And the fact that you think 16 years old is "nearly-grown" punctuates that. Kids of that age are still kids. They have complex thoughts and are just coming to the point of being truly self-aware, but to just say "Hey y'all, just have at that internet and do fetish drawings for whomever you bump into on Tumblr" is asinine.

I respect my kid and recognize that he's going to make choices that I may or may not be okay with... but if I see he's routinely camping out on some fringe site, well, that's when you have to parent.

FAT32 SHAMER posted:

I very clearly remember being a teenager...

...growing up when "internet access" was synonymous with "via a landline." WiFi existed only on paper at the time and only the children of the very wealthy had cell phones, and even then they were only useful for voice calls. And I very clearly recall having access to internet porn even with all those restrictions in place, and when it was still in its relative infancy. There realistically wasn't much my parents could have done to stop me at the time that I couldn't have worked around - short of removing our computer from the house when they weren't there.

As an IT professional now I get a good laugh at the idea that you could block a website with any degree of efficacy. Sure, it's possible in your home or on a device you control. But when internet connected devices with HD playback capability can be had for a song (say, a three plus year old mid-range smartphone), and finding open internet is as simple as walking a few blocks to the nearest retail establishment (or even within range of a lazy neighbor) I think you'll start to understand how futile this all is, and why accepting this is something they're going to eventually discover and potentially like and giving them the proper tools to process it is a better approach.

Unless you homeschool your children and never let them out of your sight. In which case a little internet porn is going to be the least of their worries long-term.
