It's both as that scene is the prime reason why the Gundam project gets the remaining push it needed. What they had produced outside of that project was immobile garbage compared to what Zeon was making.

And the GM was a product of the Gundam project.

It's basically a slightly downgraded Gundam to save on expenses. Specialist models like the Sniper Custom and Sniper II don't even need the downgraded label.

By the time of the GM's true introduction at the Battle of Jaburo, the Zeon forces had already started production of the MS-09B Dom, a mobile suit that performed slightly better than the GM but not appreciably more-survivable or deadlier against the GM's weaponry. When the war went back into space, the GM actually outperformed the MS-09R Rick Doms in most ways and were outperformed later by the MS-14 Gelgoogs; unfortunately for Zeon, the Rick Doms and Gelgoogs would be held up by the bickering Zabi family politics and the equally-serious ineptitude of high-level Zeon commanders preoccupied with bringing down the White Base and the Gundam.

That's what the wiki says about the subject.

I will begrudgingly accept that Gaia, Chaos & Abyss with their S-terrain gimmick are different enough from Calamity/Raider/Forbidden. I say begrudgingly because they're still named like bad guy suits save for Gaia which is an earthnoid as gently caress name but whatever. I guess I have one less argument against early GSD now.

Blaze Dragon posted:

It makes roughly as much sense as the Federation happily embracing Zaku-like designs in Zeta.

Everyone has monoeyes in the zeta era except the Gundams because the zeon designers all went to Anaheim. Anaheim working for both sides is a recurring thing and relevant plot point in the post OYW UC. You could argue that it is just an excuse to have monoeyes all over the place, but it is an excuse that had enough thought put into it that it makes sense in the setting.

You could make similar arguments for Minovsky Particles or the AMBAC, they're ultimately excuses for giant robot combat, yes. But they make sense and are consistent as part of UC's worldbuilding, so they don't feel like cheap excuses the same way most unobtanium or super science bullshit does. Early UC is a very well thought out setting!... At least when you're ignoring most of the sidestory material.

The GM is a good design let down by a lack of experienced pilots. The zeon designs that actually made it into mass production tended to be excellent but their supply and development issues were a joke with Zeonic and Zimmad fighting for contracts and wasting resources.

The fact that there were two separate simultaneous attempts to update the Zaku 2 design ongoing in the final month of the war tells you a lot about Zeon's development issues. Both the F2 and FZ Zaku variants approached the machine from opposite angles, with the F2 focusing on endurance and flight time extensions, while the FZ traded endurance for higher performance.

They went with the pop history interpretation where the average late-war Zeon pilot was a skilled vet like Panzer Lehr. Rather than the more direct WWII analog where bad luck can grind down aces to the point where the fascist pilots have a small skill advantage in Europe, or a massive skill disadvantage in the Pacific.

Also, the bulky look of the FZ Zaku is better than the more human proportions of the F2 Zaku.

The explanation for why Zeon ended up losing despite the Gelgoog being dramatically superior to GMs and roughly on par with the RX-78 is that most of Zeon's actual good pilots were dead or maimed so they had to stuff a bunch of recruits in them just to get them on the field in time for Solomon and A Baoa Qu.

Arc Hammer

By the time A Baoa Qu rolled around most of the Zeon aces were dead and they were throwing literally anyone they could into a machine. Zeon had the crippling supply issues of both Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany rolled into one ball of disaster. Over designed machines, too few resources, and a manpower shortage that diminished the effectiveness of the machines that actually got fielded.

Unless you were good enough to be given a custom variant of a mass production suit, you were hosed as a November/December Zeon pilot.

Neither is great - the FZ has no forehead and enough bulk to make its silhouette a shapeless blob, while the F2 looks like someone stepped on its head. The Zaku JC is better than either - the eye is narrowed, the head shrunk, and the shoulders broadened to make it look slightly more intimidating than the classic Zaku, but it's still got that underlying pathetic-junkheap air, particularly thanks to those unpainted panels. It's a design that looks terrifying from an infantryman's perspective and lovably pitiable from another mobile suit's perspective.

The Minerva was originally meant to carry the whole new Gundam series and then got hastily drafted into service to chase down the Gundamjackers, so they probably didn't have time to make another couple of prototypes so they just gave Rey and Luna some mass production suits they were already building.

Movies. They're just the series with extras and a slightly smoothed-out flow. You'll lose nothing and gain a few fun bits by watching them.

The first Thunderbolt movie did just get a reasonably-priced Blu-Ray release, rather than the previous "here's the Japanese release with Japanese pricing" version; it's not free but it's something.

It's this one: https://www.youtube.com/user/GundamInfo/videos

Unicorn RE:96 and IBO are on there, but I don't see Thunderbolt anymore (December Sky was on there a while ago, and Bandit Flower popped up a month or two ago). They cycle stuff in and out pretty regularly, which I guess is causing the confusion - the channel is always up, but the individual videos get taken down periodically.

Is it me or is the art style and animation for NT just dull, flat and lifeless. I couldn't make it past the 23 minute preview because I hated the way it looked. I also think the character designs are bad. The story seems to be ok, but I couldn't get past the look of it.

I don't like the change in direction from how Unicorn looked. The most glaring being Martha. I still needed Michelle to confirm it because my eyes weren't believing my brain.

I think Kou's problem is they seem to have bizarrely paced his story as if we were going to get a solid 45 to 50 episodes of character growth. For a first arc, he has decent enough development, but he can't carry any of the endgame.

The Notorious ZSB

I SAID WE'RE NOT GONNA BE FUCKING SUCK THIS YEAR!!!

I always felt that was kind of his place though. He's a dude who is way in over his head, surrounded by history he doesn't know about and can't really compete with who as a result gets stuck with the consequences of others actions. He is made into a scape goat for trying to fit into things way beyond him. Kou was never meant to be the concluding factor of the end game like a lot of other Gundam protagonists, he does what he did the entire run try hard to be what he thinks he should be and always falling a little short because he really has no way to provide true impact to what's going on.

Kou is a reasonably pitiable dude sucked into a mess he never should have been a part of, and I always appreciated unlike other Gundam protags who come out heroes, or magically escape the powers that be, he just gets poo poo on for his efforts because you know that's how it works a lot of the time irl.
