My friend who lives in Paris was telling me his company had a change in management that decided his department wasn't needed anymore, and so they're trying to force him to quit. I asked why they didn't just lay him off and he said because if they did that they'd have to pay him something like his full salary for the next two years whereas if he quits he "only" gets paid for an extra like, month or two instead of two years. As a result they're forcing him to do like 15 different jobs since all his coworkers already left.

I'm like "lol you wacky socialist europeans, americans work 15 different jobs for free so we don't get laid off!"

Artificial difficulty.
We have that in Mexico too. If you are fired without cause after working somewhere for more than a year, you get 6 months salary plus 20 days for every year you worked there. You also get paid a proportional part of your Christmas bonus for the year, your remaining paid vacation and so on. If you quit you get paid your remaining vacation time and Christmas bonus.

However, companies go around this in very lovely ways: keeping you as a contractor, or a strange hybrid where an outside HR company hires you as a contractor with your real wage, then having a more regular contract for minimum wage, so if you get fired, they only have to pay you those 6 months at minimum wage. Some shittier companies make you sign and turn in a letter of resignation when you begin employment, which as far as I know is very illegal, but whatever.

I was "let go" from a job when my kid was 1 month old, and when I went in for the talk the boss kept making comments about how generous he was for paying me 3 month's salary, and how he really didn't have to give me anything.

This was years ago and I'm still mad. The guy was a tool, started the company with family money, had free offices in one of his father's buildings, treated most of his employees like poo poo, and would micromanage literal mouse-clicks while standing behind people for hours.

I worked for a company that Verizon purchased, the unions kept the i
health insurance policies robust and cheap, and it was roughly a pay check for every year served.

VZ was terrible but the pay was good and they liked to have the yearly layoffs so all of us who were there for 10+ years spoke of getting let go like winning the lottery.

IBM bought or business unit and went down to one month severance max and health insurance went up 350+ a month so I split.

not really relevant but I recall that the super expensive Foxconn factory to be built in Wisconsin can only ever make lcd TVs ( needing to be gutted and retooled to move on to oled production for example) and only after 30 years will Foxconn actually start paying taxes

So they'll close the factory in 29 years from then then?

They also won't ramp up and hit the promised number of jobs and pay until they're given more gravy (such as extra years tax free). Foxconn is pretty well known for duping dumb and corrupt local officials into poo poo deals they never hold up their end of.

2 weeks per year of service is typical in buy-outs, so only the old timers are getting that much. If there's any of them still around, it's like wining a mini-lottery if they were planning on retiring anyway. Lots of big companies have older workers that hold off on retirement and do the bare minimum to try and get a package.

I get 1 week per year at my current job if for some reason I got kicked out tomorrow. So given that Verizon was really trying to buy out as many people as possible they were probably being pretty generous.

Also they've already reduced the number of jobs before they even built the thing. Just like everywhere else Foxconn has built a factory. They're on the cutting edge of scamming municipalities.

They sure as hell aren't giving 60 weeks to any more than a handful of well-connected staff.
