Go back and watch some of those early Goldust matches, the entire crowd is chanting homophobic slurs. I know that the gay panic heel is almost as old as wrestling itself but doesn't make it any less heinous. As weird as it sounds Katie Vick feels out matched in this tourney. It seems like a quaint anecdote someone brings up when they talk about how dumb wrestling is when compared to most of this poo poo.

Seriously though. its a question I've always wondered and never really gotten a clear answer for. Why did Vince hate Dusty so drat much? I had a reflexive defense of Goldust that I nearly typed up a couple of times but like the more I thought about it the more and more it became kind of indefensible.

And yeah, Katie Vick just doesn't feel like it belongs. Its more of an embarrassment for HHH than anything else. Its just gross and pathetically dumb. Definitely feels like the NIT team that snuck in because of odd seeding/First Four shenanigans. edit: But hey, every tournament has a few dud 12s that people pick and then realize when the game starts are just outmatched. I got into wrestling around '95 and I refused to watch WWF for years because the programming was so incredibly bigoted. Like, WCW was bad but WWF was on a whole other level. And Goldust was the #1 thing that repulsed me. Going "It was the 90's" is bullshit cuz you are not going to find another show that featured cartoony characters facing off in a Milton Bradley Karate Fighters tournament in one segment and a dude in a crown shouting about a "fag" in the next. This poo poo was marketed at kids. Hard. And I'm pretty sure at least for awhile Goldust was featured on the syndicated shows, which drew a younger audience and frequently aired during the day. Goldust's peak predates the Attitude Era. This is before South Park and Jerry Springer getting too hot for TV and the adoption of the TV content ratings system/V-chip. This was before TV got super sleazy; pretty sure you had to watch some Morton Downey Jr or Geraldo to catch something as hateful as Goldust and, y'know, that poo poo wasn't marketed (or of interest to) kids. poo poo loving sucked and it was clearly abhorrent at the time and I was, y'know, a kid. There's no excusing it.

The thing that makes it a Goldust slam dunk is that a few years ago I watched a show on the WWE Network when I had it arguing that the Goldust stuff was actually ahead of its time and teaching inclusivity. They have whitewashed that poo poo so hard while the Katie Vick stuff is universally acknowledged as being dumb (though Vince probably still thinks it was hilarious).

GRR is going to massacre the Titan bracket except for Maaaaaybe OTE continuing. And I will mash the vote button on it until it's out. Warrior Award and Melanie Pillman are going to get into a knife fight and I think Melanie will win but I hope the Warrior Award will win. Owen and Crown Jewel are destined to fight in The Stamford Bracket with Owen probably winning. Personally I want "Independent Contractor Status" to beat both, but that's probably not happening, as I lean towards systematic issues over isolated issues. I would be surprised to see the Ring Boy scandal get under 70% of the vote in any of its matches in Greenwich bracket. Usually I would favor "Talent getting paid pennies on the dollar" here but Jesus, it's like if Penn State rehired Sandusky. Either Owen or the Ring Boy Scandal will win. I want either GRR, Independent Contractors or Getting Paid Pennies to win, but that might be a hot take.

Most people don't know katie vick is a real person who was friends With stephanie mcmahon throughout middle school and into Early highschool. When they stopped being friends because of typical hosed up adolescent social stuff it was pretty messy and they hated each other well into adulthood. after the 'katie vick' angle, the few mutual friends they still had were basically forced to pick sides. in 2006 they buried the hatchet but aren't exactly 'friendly.' Anyway that's why the angle deserves to be in the tournament and made it over a lot of stuff that is obviously worse than the stupid angle on the surface.

I'm on the "Katie Vick was stupid, Goldust was hurtful" train. Katie Vick was "disgusting" in the most literal sense, but I don't think it did any real harm, whereas enforcing gay panic absolutely did. And "people didn't know homophobia was a bad thing in the 90's" is a bullshit excuse that can gently caress right off. Final 4 predictions are Owen, Ring Boy Scandal, GRR and I'm going to pick Snuka as a dark horse candidate. I realize that Snuka technically doesn't include the potential cover-up of his crimes, but I think that will influence the vote for a lot of people. Predicting either Ring Boy Scandal or Owen as the winner, with GRR as the runner-up.

Oh, and just in case it doesn't happen in the finals. For me GRR is worse than Crown Jewel. At least with Crown Jewel, WWE was forced to downplay the Saudis and nix the propaganda, which I'm sure from MBS's viewpoint was the really important part anyway. And Crown Jewel sounded like such a lovely show it could almost be mistaken for protest art.

I liked Goldust but admittedly by the time I started watching WWF again, they'd already paired him with Marlena and the gay panic stuff had already subsided. The Katie Vick thing was just atrocious to me. They ran out this whole contrived angle and the payoff was HHH dry humping a mannequin in a casket. So Kane has to be mad at HHH over a made up dead girlfriend and fight him for the honor of his made up dead girlfriend who's corpse wasn't actually molested. Like Kane needs any loving motivation to murk someone. He's loving Kane, an avatar of destruction so powerful he makes the ring explode. I think HHH won that one too. So dumb. I ended up voting Katie Vick as a kneejerk reaction but afterwards of the two, Goldust was probably the worst. Homophobia gets people killed. Necrophilia jokes are in bad taste but to my knowledge, no one's died over them.

The worst thing about Katie Vick was Triple H's "And if you don't like this storyline you can kiss my rear end!!" promo, which was just another showcase of Vince McMahon's childishness. While I (somewhat regrettably) ended up liking Goldust during his 2002-2004 run, you simply can't deny that it was an intentionally offensive gimmick. That it was during a period where WWE was being marketed first and foremost to kids, as one poster above discussed, just makes it even worse. Also there was the time where Russo and Co got their Attitude Era claws into him and he started coming out wearing fetish gear. Because gay? idk.
