I’d never run anything other than discs if given the choice, anyone picking rim brakes just has some weird dislike of progress. Even if there was a hefty weight penalty (there isn’t) I’d still run them because they’re consistent in all conditions.

As a non bike guy, is it reasonable possible to build a bike from scratch just picking components? Or do you have to buy a quality bike in the first place and upgrade everything?

It's reasonable, and there are bike Co ops in most decent sized cities who will teach you to do that and general repair/maintenence if you put the time into a couple bikes they have laying around that need work. You generally start with a frame, then build from there depending on your use case. You can get decent carbon clones from aliexpress for a third to a fifth of what you'd pay retail for them, but support is nonexistent and if it's a bad batch you are poo poo out of luck. I pretty much constantly have a wishlist of "perfect reasonable commuter" running and updating as my whims change. Moderately roomy/upright carbon frame, bomb-proof high spoke count rims, sram groupset, disc brakes. Can't really go too wrong with that as long as you get higher profile tires to absorb just a little more road noise. Another option is bikes direct, who seem to mostly have their poo poo together above lovely stem shift bikes and hybrids nowadays. E: also lbt just came home with us, they gave this 4 pound dog 3 liters of fluid and she perked right up. How the gently caress she keep all that down? Very resonable. Both my bikes were basically pick a frame and slot in what components I wanted. You can do that on just about all levels of bike and mix/match whatever will fit.

I went the route of mostly-but-not-completely-dickered thrift store hardtail MTB (with, rather critically, a not-totally-poo poo frame) and just reconfigure as I break stuff and while I'm into it for about what an actual good used bike is worth after my first season it's now exactly the bike I want minus a handful of minor things.

It costs quite a bit more than just buying a bike with the parts you want. Unless you need/want something really weird and custom, it isn't really worth it. Bike OEMs get parts way cheaper than you can buy them, even from the european online stores (the european stores are the cheapest because due to EU laws, shimano can exercise way less control). Disc brakes in like 2001 were loving rear end, but they're way better now. Other than for a flat lander, fair weather skinny tire road bike, they are buy far the best choice. Rim brakes look better on a classic looking road bike though.

The UK Company Hope would like a word with you sir, I was running Hope M4 4 pot calipers back then and they were incredibly good in terms of raw power, modulation and maintenance-free running. Hope were ahead of the game though definitely.

(Ok 1 kg per bike and I'm not sure that included the rotor) The difference between some cheap rear end avid cable discs and high end discs in 2001 is so amazing to me. The kids don't even know.

I had one friend burn through a set of v-brake pads pretty much every weekend we rode in winter which is y'know, not ideal.

I just scored a 'Smart' Airconditioner controller as everything in my house is old and doesn't have any form of remote access: Actually very surprised it paired with my lovely old Teco with just a press of the original remote button. All functions supported. Will be testing out the Geofencing poo poo tomorrow when I leave the house and see the logs whether or not it actually turned off when I left home and turned on on my designated GPS radius. I am eternally forgetting to turn the bedroom AC off so worth a try. In the meantime, I'm port scanning it and tempted to tear it apart and see if it's just an ESP32 with fancy webapps. Unfortunately the geofencing doesn't work too well, the app suspends in the background too quickly, even with battery saver turned off specifically for it. So, instead I use an IFTTT task to have it turn on and off based on whether or not I'm connected to my home wifi.

Took my new bike out for a ride to my buddy's bike shop, he said I stole it for 400 so I'm pretty happy about that. Man this things rides so smooth, I don't know if it's going from rigid-rear end alloy to CroMo but it just feels so much better. After talking with my buddy some I might just stay with the rear brake for awhile, if I want a front disc I'll have to get a new hub as well so that won't be happening anytime soon. Also I'm really happy with the gearing, it's perfect. Might not even want to get an internally geared hub for awhile. My friend also said the freewheel is rebuildable which I never heard of before lol. CEL on my Escape is on. OBD scanner and the car's built in diagnostic test mode both report that the computer hasn't thrown any trouble codes. It drives perfectly fine. What's the deal, Ford!? Is this the point where I regret buying a new Ford? Not looking for any help here, just frustrated with new cars and their fancy computers.

Often there is a separate "check fuel cap" idiot light that may or may not illuminate along with the CEL. It should also set code P0455.

All the new Fords I've seen don't even have a gas cap, it's just like a flap that you push out of the way with the pump nozzle. I read online that it will throw codes for trivial things like coolant level too low, so at least I have a few obvious things to check before I say gently caress it and take it into a shop. drat curious what made it angry though, the car sits in a garage all day and only has 10k miles after 2 years.

One of my friends was huge into mountain bike riding and racing, and his Cannondales had hydraulic disc brakes on it and that was about 8-10 years ago.
