I'm kind of worried if Clannad will feel like the characters are catering/pandering to you, the player, instead of interacting with a proper main character, if that makes sense. I was sort of having that issue with Doki Doki Lit Club where it felt a bit pandering but was glad that they weren't playing it straight. At least Kindred Spirits, so far, seems to be mostly watching other characters' stories. Didn't know there were things like that? ...Might I recommend Long Live the Queen? It's like that, but, like, way heavier on the mechanical aspects, and you're mostly trying to survive rather than romance. It's only $4 USD right now on Steam! quick edit: And CLANNAD definitely doesn't feel like pandering, and the main character is an actual character. double edit: It does have a character who looks like this, though. They mostly fell out of fashion because there's a lot more people who want to see a relationship play out than there are people who want to minmax or replay a bunch, but there's still some around.

I'd argue they're still around, they just slid more into the other half of their genre. The original Tokimeki Memorial has a lot more in common with Persona 5 than it does with modern romance VNs.

Amateur dating sims were also pretty popular a decade or more ago on newgrounds but were widely mocked on SA (they all sucked rear end, to be fair). Then people started applying the term to all romance visual novels in what felt like a reductive manner, as if they were dismissing them all as pandering trash without considering the merits of the stories. A lot of them are pandering trash, but some of them, like Clannad, aren't pandering at all. And there's a large amount of VNs that are a mix of pandering trash with a story, which I always avoid recommending to anyone unless I know they're capable of enjoying the trashy elements too. Doesn't help their reputation when most of them are pornographic (Clannad isn't, in any version). Anyway, Clannad's good if you like romance and coming of age dramas. The other games I posted earlier (besides muv luv) are safer picks if you're not sure.

One half became straight visual novels and one half became RPG romance options

More to the point Crusader Kings is already the Crusader Kings of dating sims. From what I've seen recently the internet seems to be more interested in making the Dark Souls of dating sims.

I still wish that (the game about girls in shells which technically doesn't qualify for this thread because 18+) hadn't pretty much dropped the detective aspect in the second game in favor of more incest. Hunting a serial killer in the first game was actually interesting, if occasionally frustrating. I've somehow made a habit of playing weird detective VNs. I've played Eve Burst Error (DON'T) and Soulslayer (okay but short) and Famicom Detective Club (the translated part 2, and it's not awful if you can tolerate retro style but I still complained a lot about the ending) and Jisei (which I can't remember much about) and probably more I can't think of right now.

theblackw0lf posted:From what i understand LDV is more of a romance game with some detective elements (though the mysteries aren’t that mysterious) Yeah i was being facetious. I'm still not at a branching point, still in the common route, and although there's plenty of mystery cases they aren't anything special and in fact very easily solvable. I heart the game gets kinda dark though when you get to the routes and I'm hoping at least story wise it will be more memorable. The MC and characters so far are great though! So as an otome it has my seal of approval so far.

Finished Umineko Chapter 3. I’m still not sure what the hell is going on with Eva/Beatrice; hopefully there will more of an explanation that what this chapter provides. I figured Beatrice was trying to pull a long con on Battler. It’s really the only move she had after Battler, fed up with her sadism, declined to play with her any longer. Ronove is even more of an rear end in a top hat than I suspected since he obviously knew what Beatrice was planning the entire time. I’m not sure yet if Virgilia was in on it; she seemed genuinely appalled by Beatrice’s behavior prior to her “death.” (The Virgilia who showed up at the very end of the chapter could simply been more of Beato's psychotic furniture.) I found it odd that she didn’t show up at the 3rd tea party. This chapter needed a bit of editing, but overall I’m loving this game and can’t wait to start Chapter 4 tomorrow.

I'm not sure you'd really consider it a visual novel since, well, it doesn't really have much for visuals, but I've really enjoyed this game Open Sorcery that I picked up for $1.19 on the steam sale. It's a text/decision based game about an "elemental firewall", a fire elemental bound by C++ code to defend several locations from spiritual threats. By your decisions, you can awaken as a sentient being, bond with the people you're trying to defend, or turn against them. The setting is pretty unique, and I enjoyed it a lot, and there's quite a bit of variance depending on how you decide to do things. It took me about 2 hours to get through once, and 6-8 hours to see everything. There's also a new Christmas themed DLC that just came out, which seems almost as substantial as the main game and I ended up purchasing it right after I finished the regular game.

Hey I finally am like "into" Umineko Ep4 - Battler just got the blue text, and they're all watching the fourth game back in 1986 on Rokkenjima now. Just a question, I'm not sure it matters much at all, but when was the scene with Ange and Maria's....shade(?) at the boarding school? I figure it must have been between 1986 and 1998 but can't at all remember. It's just taken me so long to slog through the opening of this one for some reason. On a related note, my game crashed after several hours of reading yesterday so I have some skipping to do now. I'm thinking something with how Steam Big Picture mode works is loving with it. Frustrating as hell. I've been streaming it straight to my TV through the Steam Link app so it's not convenient to dig through event logs trying to decipher what could have crashed it, but BP Mode seems kind of garbage even when I'm not streaming so I'm placing the blame there.

I don't remember a year or even Ange's age mentioned. Maybe that she's now some amount of years older than Maria was through which you could deduce the approximate year. You might want to look into Parsec as an alternative method for streaming the game to your mac if you suspect Steam's BP is crashing things. It arguably performs better than Steam's in-home streaming too. Edit: I misread you have a mac for some reason. Parsec is good if you have something that can run the client. Since it was on sale, I got Muv-Luv after hearing about it for ages. Going in pretty much unspoiled. Thus far it's, well, as the OP says a lot of comedic high school stuff and high-larious misunderstandings but it's done well even if to somebody who's probably a vet at these things it probably shows its age.
