If I lived somewhere properly cold, I'd almost certainly have a preheater system fitted to whatever my daily driver was.

I need to get a new scraper for the few times it really iced up here in Texas. I had a good one, but I got a little aggressive with it a couple of years ago and snapped it in half. Pity. It was something like a decade old or older at that point. It served me well.

I was afraid of snapping my lovely E36 plastic door handles, so I ran in and out of the house several times with a pot of hot tap water until I thawed the driver's door enough to open it

When I lived in minnesota, I remember driving a California car I bought from my dad back via new Mexico and the fluid freezing in the lines just before abq on a pass. I assume it was 32 degree fluid. I went to the auto zone in abq and was shocked all they had was 20f fluid when in Minnesota, everything was -40. I drained the California fluid in my hotel parking lot once it got warm enough that morning, but a small about of 20f in and waited until I was far north enough to get some real loving washer fluid. Now that I live in California, I get mildly worried about the 32F stuff I use when it drops to 30F overnight and the stop careing. Also that same car had the hood shock fail when it wouldn't start at -20f some morning. I had my head under ig and that poo poo was heavy. Proper hood props only, none of those fancy shocks from now on.

A couple years ago we got 3/4-1" of ice followed by a bit of snow. Due to a project taking up lots of space the 928 was parked outside. Ended up using a butane torch held just close enough to melt along the door outline so I could get inside to start it. After idling a while we were able to scrape off the windshield and go from there. My brother used the torch on his windshield, massive crack as expected. Then a bucket of hot water on the rear glass (prelude) and cracked that one as well. When we were driving the 320i from CA to WI after buying it from my cousin we hit a blizzard bad enough to slow us down to ~25mph which was the same speed the storm was moving. Windshield washer fluid froze and we discovered a massive hole in the firewall from where the AC had been removed. We stuffed the AC hole with socks and whatever else we had but even with that the defrost could barely keep up. Every few minutes whoever wasn't driving would have to climb out the window and knock the ice off the wiper blades.

I just had a car delivered back to me from a lovely mechanic who failed to fix the coolant leak, he filled it with distilled water which has promptly frozen in the subzero weather we have here at the moment. Fucker.

I left distilled water / water wetter in a motorcycle when it froze overnight (obviously rare in Arizona), the worst damage done was that it broke a radiator clamp and pushed water out.

They're really just plugging casting holes, I wouldn't ever rely on them in the slightest to protect against cracking.

My dog had to get tibia plateau leveling surgery because her ACL and meniscus got all hosed. Trying to keep an energetic pit bull from jumping, running, walking, or really do anything for 4 weeks is a fun job, even with doggy drugs, but at least I get pics like this: That's a very high pit bull who is just awake enough to know that she really wants sushi.

Winding the long way back home. This has certainly been one hell of a trip to Canada and GG what a way to start a year. (She's going to move to Australia. She doesnt like cold weather.... so wedding August and then..... actually I'm not sure how this importation of a Canadian works. Is there a immigration thread in SA somewhere?)

You can get some really weird poo poo if you enter on the wrong visa to marry, for example, in the UK and Canada and as a commonwealth country, I'd suspect Aus would be similar. This probably doesn't mean they need to do the whole process, but you want someone who actually knows what they are talking about rather than some internet expert. Oh and the processing time is amazing, so get the ball rolling ASAP.

The actual marriage bit actually isnt a problem - I already have the correct visa. Advantage of living in a Commonwealth country. Its the what comes after is going to be the problem. An expensive and time consuming problem that takes 26 months minimum. Were very well aware of the processing time :/ I was more hoping there was a thread thatll point us to someone who is recommended as an actual expert. And yeah I bet theres things that dont need lawyers but we should take care of or be aware of. We are both more than just a bit aware this isnt a process you cant get wrong and its not easy. One bit of advice we have been told is to keep chat via social media / chat services and call logs - Anything to prove an ongoing and serious relationship.THEN theres the four different visa types and fuuuuck what a minefield

Meanwhile the last few days its taken the entire 40 min trip home to get the inside of my car cool with the AC cranked. 40 degrees in the shade yesterday. Our normal correctional services prisoner cleaning team didn’t turn up today so the boss and I got stuck with toilet cleaning duties. Day started with finding a turd in a urinal and went downhill from there

Humphreys posted:Can't you just beef up the wiper motors and stick a bunch of razor blades to the arms? I like the way you think. Additional ice story: a bunch of years ago, a winter storm came through Dallas in the middle of the day, so, wisely, most employers let their workers go home early. I was one of them. Fortunately, 90% of the trip was, at that time, by commuter rail, but I still got stuck in a bunch of traffic, in ice and snow, leaving the rail station. I was daily driving my ‘79 RX-7 at the time, which already had a crack in the lower part of the windshield. Apparently, the defroster on that thing works really well (of course it does - rotaries produce almost nothing but noise and HEAT.) As I was sitting in traffic, talking to my wife on my phone, I *watched* that damned crack start creeping across the windshield from the defroster heat. At least it was already done for, and since it was low, I still haven’t had to actually replace the windshield. Inside got nice and warm, too!

Miss y'all too, hoping to get back in the fold this year. The last few years have been pretty well fuckered but who's last few years haven't been? We sold our company a few years ago and since I had already paid off my debt, when the checks started coming in (I had stock options) I put some $$ away but bought some toys too. Then I got tired of living out in the country so when the new owners (Texas megacorp with a two letter name and no they don't make calculators) acted like they wanted to move part of our operation to Seattle, I jumped at it. The car & motorcycle went into storage, and I figured I'd get situated here and then find a place with a garage, etc. etc. Long story short, that was a galactically stupid idea. This place is bloody expensive and the new owners aren't keen on paying a proper Seattle wage. I'm dumping $1800/mo into a tiny 1-room apartment. That's not bay area bad, but it's bad. BUT it's been a good move, even if it's only for a few years. I was a piece of poo poo and had been for a long time. Fat & depressed, wasting away in a basement home theater. Started smoking trees which made it all better & worse, and I really think I was just going to slowly transition into a permanent sadblob. When I moved here I stopped eating poo poo, started walking everywhere, started working out, etc. 25 lbs to go until I'm in the 'normal' range, down from "class V: super obese" about 12 years ago. Taken off ~160lbs so far, all CICO and activity. I pay almost as much for running shoes as I used to pay for car insurance. So this year they either pay me more or I find someone who will. With my CV & skillset I'm an idiot for not getting out years ago. God what an irritating pile of self-absorbed drivel that was, the point is that life is pretty awesome now but I hate being a poor. I'd like to keep the Aston but the smart move, even if just in the near term, is to sell it while I reshuffle. It'd be great to get another one at some point, maybe the V8S or a V12. Better yet, some training for the pink idiot behind the wheel. Not the fastest or best car on the road but I just fell in love with it. I took a few trips down the west coast, did a bunch of road trips up here, honestly I got a good amount of fun out of it, but knowing it's just sitting there in a storage unit in Spokane while I need the money is killing me. And no matter what, the VFR is getting new front shocks and a whole mess of miles this year, one way or the other.
