They're for the most part incredibly simple mechanisms, so I'd be surprised if the failure rate was really any more than any other car part... My car's 32 years old this year, if you were to compare a gif of the pop up mechanism from then to now, it'd look the same. The 2 other cars at my place with pop ups are the same. I'm not sure how you'd break them tbh. GnarlyCharlie4u posted:

They get wobbly when the nylon bushings in the actuator arms crumble, though they still continue to work. There's a guy on RX7Club and eBay 3D printing replacement headlight and wiper arm bushings. My '87 Corolla seems fine so far. Most of them that you see permanently or partially popped up are horrible owner failures. Olympic Mathlete posted:Corvette apparently! OK, those are cool.

This has always been one of my favourite pop- mechanisms in a car. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alJZ4nlyDvQ Supposed to drop down over (I think) 45km/h but trivially easy to rig up with a switch in the cabin.

As Nero Danced posted:The programmers dilemma. Which is worse: it's broken and I don't know why, or it's fixed and I don't know why. It's broken and I don't know why is the expected state. It's fixed and I don't know why means it's actually still broken, but now I can't easily troubleshoot it and it's going to fail at some inconvenient point in the future. In fact, it will probably fail again while I'm working on something unrelated causing an 'it's broken and I don't know why' situation.

I love "It's broken and I've exhausted all the reasons why weeks ago, so now I'm just guessing." Because it can only lead to "It's fixed and I think I know why, but it might actually still be broken"

fakeaccount posted:...why? those covers look like they were clear when they were new. Because at the time clear covers over headlights were illegal in the US. This is also why Euro imports often had different headlight setups in the US market. Like the Citreon DS or why the Ferrari Daytona switched to pop-ups.

Adaptive headlights own. They sound like a gimmick but they really do make a big difference on dark winding roads where you can really see them working. The ones on my e46 work really well, and I’m glad they are becoming fairly common on new cars.
