I agree freedom of travel is a thing that needs to happen, but there needs to be ports of entry to make sure people are not bringing ecological disaster with them.

This isn't true at all because of public services, taxation and system of laws are different between the american nations. Even then you need a visa for import and export controls. We could work to create a EU like environment but that would be giving up a lot economic power for the US and even then there is a tons of pitfalls in creating a new political and economic union. Just take a look at the problems that the EU had forming and the on-going problems some of its members are facing being in the union (Greece with its government-debt). Ether-way your acting as if US is the only country that uses visas when this is the standard for every single country.
