I think that's actually the result of real security. It is a lot harder to get ahold of bulk explosive materials now than it was in McVeigh's day precisely because of the regulatory changes made to how they're tracked after OKC.

Yep, if you buy even a smidge more fertilizer than would be normal, you get flagged. Permits to buy fertilizer in bulk are tightly controlled and scrutinized as well.

Plus, in order to build a bomb that will go off when intended, specialized training and a certain level of intelligence is needed. In leui of training, being very smart can substitute in some cases

I often question what is the purpose of airport security. Like, it's not that I don't think we need some, I just want to know what it is so we can actually use it that way.

Is it to prevent illicit materials from traveling from place to place? If so, which illicit materials?

Is it to prevent someone from shooting up the actual airport, since it's, you know, busy and a target for crazies?

Is it to stop people from hijacking the planes?

I get the planes attract crazy people because of their visibility, so they demand more security than say, a bus terminal; but I think each of those questions demands a different approach and the current way of handling things accomplishes basically none of them.

It does remove a prime opportunity for robbing people's luggage that is provided by the requirement for TSA openable locks. That's why I'll never fly with anything expensive in checked baggage under the current regs. Too easy to access.

X-raying luggage is no big deal.

Most of the security measures in place stem directly from specific incidents of planes blowing up. If you go back to the 1970s and 1980s, it's amazing how many planes got blown up in terrorist attacks. The liquid ban stemmed from some apparent plot to use binary liquid-based explosives coming out of Al-Qaeda, and the laptops being separated out was another linked to a specific bombmaker (which, to bring it back to this topic, was the thing Trump told the Russian ambassador all about in the Oval Office meeting after firing Comey.)

Among security professionals, a line of thought some adhere to is that airport screenings are "security theater". That is, they exist to make the passengers feel safer.

From that point of view, the actual efficacy of the screenings is actually beside the point so long as they appear efficacious to the passengers.

You say "each of those questions demands a different approach and the current way of handling things accomplishes basically none of them" and people who adhere to the above line of thinking would say "yeah -- because actually securing the airport and flight against the threats you outlined isn't the primary goal".

My personal view is that airport screenings indeed are often optimized for politics and public relations rather than threat mitigation, but that they're necessary and they do help at least some.

I believe we should have pre 9/11 screening because flying involves being in a closed and stressful environment for multiple hours, and in this country we allow unstable people to own handguns. I'm much more worried about an armed citizen than I am about foreign terrorists.
