I only today found the Goron dude for Tarry Town and I had to look it up because I had apparently completely missed the Southern Mine by just climbing my way up the mountain so I just never actually passed by it. I think I'm still missing a couple of stables I avoid paths so much. I any case, I assumed for some reason the castle was off limits until the end game or something idk why

There's a lot of good loot to find there, however, so it's worth your while to explore even if it's intimidating with so many guardians around. The most important thing to find is the nearly unbreakable Hylian shield with the shrine at the port being a close second.

I'd say I'm at midgame. Two beasts done and just got the master sword and fire breaker armor. The castle has seemed off limits to me, how should I visit it? Just go in the front door or is there a more logical spot? I do have a quest to get a cookbook, which I found odd to get so early.

Theres like five different ways to get in depending on how comfortable you are deal with Guardians. The safest way by far is to sail/cryonis/glide into the river entrance. Also there are a few good things to keep an eye out for. A Memory, 2 diaries (one pretty hidden) as well as some great equipment and a shrine. Just don't go up too far to the big chapel unless you want to fight Ganon

But there's 3 sets of them and you get a perma-powered-up Master Sword at the end. Which is nice. Sneaking around the castle is thrilling at lower levels, and there's good loot in there. There's a couple of quests, and someone in a stable near the castle tells you about different ways to sneak in. It's heavily hinted that it's worthwhile and survivable to nose around the castle even if you aren't ready to fight Ganon.

Thinking about it, I realize that I assumed the purple stuff swirling around the castle was a sort of forcefield that would keep me out until I had all 4 Divine Beasts. This was just a wild assumption on my part based on how other games worked. BotW very clearly implied that there was no area off limits in the game so that was my bad.

It makes sense that Guardians are scattered in seemingly nonsensical places. They were unleashed in a chaotic fashion so they just sped off in murderous rages across the land. Like how the hell did some wind up atop the East Gerudo Mesa as well?
