so I was reading about this canadian that is being executed for smuggling meth, and like, it seems absolutely wrong to execute a guy for smuggling drugs and even worse to hand out a death sentence in much shorter retrial for the same crime, or something. but a lot of western outlets are like "China attempting to pressure Canada with death penalty" like the only reason the Chinese state would execute a drug trafficker with hundreds of pounds of meth is to cynically, uh, piss off the Canadians somehow, or some vague perfidy? it doesn't even make any sense. China has been executing Chinese people for significantly smaller quantities of drugs basically forever. it irritates me that reporting on foreign internal affairs still has to circulate around the supposedly central role the west plays in motivating everything China does, but would never use the same language describing like, US domestic policy
