The best guess is obviously that Buzzfeed have misrepresented the quality of the evidence that they have tying Trump to Cohen's perjury, but it's basically anyone's guess what's going on at the moment.

Yea the problem is even Buzzfeed isn't stupid enough to double down on 'actually we're all right' if they don't have a reason to beyond 'our guy pinkie swore' when it's literally the Special Council's Office saying 'this has a big mistake'. So yea, I'm really curious how they play the next couple steps I guess because if they seriously leave it at 'our guy swore' they hosed up

I think Marcy is onto something.

Buzzfeed is very likely right in the sense that Mueller has evidence that if you look at it you'd go "yeah Trump is directing Cohen to lie and coordinating it, there's no other explanation for this pattern of everyone in contact with Trump but not each other having the same instructions and marching orders". What Mueller likely doesn't have is an email or document from Donald trump himself giving that instruction.

This is exactly the trap he's built for himself, though. The Right groaning over this pathetic baby concession is very telling.

If he concedes ANYTHING they're going to be pissy about it because they think he can just go full fasc and get the wall (and I guess clear out the Senate while he's at it because why not). If he opens the government with no wall, he looks terrible. If he offers meek compromises and gets the wall, he still looks weak. If he goes full strongman he probably gets his wrist slapped by the courts and still doesn't get anything.

Fox News pushed him into the biggest no-win scenario.

The problem is that people don't like being referred to as desperate or poor or downwardly mobile or paupers. Remember we're all temporarily embarrassed millionaires and any day now we'll go from making 20k a year to 20k a day

I think the problem is more due to the six-figure-and-up taxpayers--including Congressional Dems--who call themselves and others in their brackets "middle-class." Hence even the "left"ish party only talking about raising taxes on the top .001 percent, even though our tax structure is lopsidedly in their favor on everything from social-security pay-ins to taxing unearned income at lower rates than earned income.

Those of us who are poor or lower income don't think of ourselves as "embarrassed millionaires" when we're struggling to pay our healthcare costs or our credit-card debt or our rent increases. Those who are making minimum wage--and yet still don't qualify for Medicaid expansion or who live in a state that didn't expand it--didn't shrug off the penalty fines for not being able to afford private health insurance when they were in effect; we just grew more bitter about watching more wealth handed to those who least needed it.

eta: There's a reason why millennials, who've been the most shafted by this country's economic policies of any living generation, are more open to socialism and down on capitalism.

yeah aoc's suggestion is incredibly moderate. the 70 percent bracket would only apply to ~16,000 people. even putting it to 1 million or above would touch a tiny percentage of americans.

yeah this was going to be my response to Blurred's "they wouldn't have bothered if it was trivial" post

they have serious interests in limiting public expectations about what Michael Cohen will testify to, because they potentially need him in court to bring down people OTHER than donald trump that coordinated the lies to congress. it's very harmful to their future case if the public expectation is that Michael Cohen has the smoking gun on Trump telling him to lie to Congress and anything less than that is a disappointment

i still am assuming Ronan Farrow correctly explained the problem and that the entire dispute is over Trump "personally" telling Cohen something - which wouldn't make much sense, since Trump sure as gently caress isn't reading proposed statements to Congress in advance. Lawyers and corporate people are doing that, he's illiterate

"...creating a vision of the sort of society you want to have in miniature"

quote:

Pelosi Statement on Trump Speech

JANUARY 19, 2019

San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement in advance of the President’s address:

“Democrats were hopeful that the President was finally willing to re-open government and proceed with a much-need discussion to protect the border.

“Unfortunately, initial reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives. It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter. For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.

“Democrats support smart, effective border security solutions:

Increased infrastructure investments at our ports of entry including additional ports and roads;
Advanced technology to scan for drugs, weapons and contraband where the vast majority of drugs come in to our country and advanced technology to detect unauthorized crossings;
More customs personnel including filling the more than 3,000 customs and border patrol vacancies; and
More immigration judges.
“Next week, Democrats will pass a package of six bills agreed to by House and Senate negotiators and other legislation to re-open government so that we can fully negotiate on border security proposals.

“The President must sign these bills to re-open government immediately and stop holding the American people hostage with this senseless shutdown. Each day he prolongs this needless crisis, Coast Guardsmen, FBI agents, border patrol officers, TSA agents, and hundreds of thousands more workers are forced to live without knowing how they can feed their families or pay their bills.

“The President has taken pride in shutting down government. Now, he must take action to open up government.”
