How do you even get a 78 month loan for a used car? What bank was like 'yeah this is legit?' My condolences on the forever debt.

The sad thing with a loan like that it's probably at some insane, credit card like interest rate too. One of my pastimes of looking at awful financial decisions is going through a lease-takeover website (in Canada we have Leasebusters) and filtering the results especially high end, luxury and sports cars. Some of the leases people get themselves into are amazing, with awful monthly premiums and the buy-out at the end basically way more than the vehicle is going to be worth. Or, leases where it's basically mile'd out and there is still over a year on the lease with $$rape$$ excess charges. The terrible leases on normal cars aren't quite as funny, they are more sad.

I remember reading that Jalopnik article last year, and that guy is both a huge idiot and the victim of predatory lending. There's also no way he's anything like the average subprime borrower since he had $4k in available cash for a down payment. In any case, a lot of people spend too much on loans because it's actually kind of hard to secure a non-predatory small personal loan with poo poo credit. A lot of times they're going to be on very short terms that might make the payments out of reach or difficult, which makes a much longer term loan on something like a $12k car suddenly seem really appealing. BHPH places basically rely on the fact that most of their customers can't just easily go out and get a good personal loan for $5k.

I had a friend get 10 credit inquiries from one of those "low credit" dealerships, they ended up with a 5 year, 16% interest loan on a loving Yaris. That "$4000" car is going to cost more than $7000 I was approved for (and thankfully talked down from using) a $3k personal loan from the exact same credit union that had just declined my $3k auto loan application earlier that week The Door Frame fucked around with this message at 05:23 on Jan 21, 2019 |

It just could be had with a V8 (302W), such as it was, and shared a platform with the Fox-chassis Mustang, so can now be made into a stealth Mustang, essentially. I don't know if I'd go with ugly, but they were... uninspiring. Fake everything. There was a version with a swoopier roof (Ford Fairmont Futura) that was a bit more attractive, but they still insisted on a vinyl half-top and two tone paint on it. Also a wagon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Fairmont quote:And keeping with the spirit of the thread, I laughed when I first read this ......... and now I'm thinking I might buy the bloody thing if it's still in one piece. You guys definitely know how to build a bull bar. I've seen a few of those leaking out over here in the US on big rigs, and a lot of the tube style bars on newer tractor trailers, presumably because they don't put those massive flat steel bumpers on them any more, and over-the-road guys want some additional protection.

Bit less than 3000 pounds. And you could get it with the *turbocharged* 4-banger - though it was still carbureted. 120 HP! To be fair, the 302 was only 140.

They’re slightly larger than a Mustang if the time, so... not that big? “Big” is an early ‘70s Olds 98, or Powershift’s Lincoln Mark. Even in ‘80, a Caprice or Town Car were bigger by several feet. The Fairmont/Zephyr were compacts at the time.

That size/style bullbar (5 poster) on a light commercial ute is pretty outrageous, tbh, and not too common here, but the style is practically compulsory for any long hauling semis. The big chrome bumpers (I call them dozer blades) never took off here. You see the odd one, almost always on city trucks. I have a stupid plan to build up an old crapper as a mini prime mover with an overpowered Cummins, stack, tanks etc, and that bar is a perfect fit. I'll probably end up in the BWM threads at some point.
