So if you only count these three channels and only during certain hours, there are only four soap operas? That seems pretty meaningless.

Soap Operas used to make up the bulk of US Broadcast television's daytime programming - from like 12:30 to 4 PM it was solid soaps; something like 12 new hours a day, 5 days a week. Even just a decade ago, there were still 8 series running. For people over a certain age, it's a cultural touchstone.

(My grandmother used to be a fanatic for ABC's soap operas and wouldn't even flip over to the other networks to check in during commercials. Now, since ABC is down to just General Hospital, the market has forced her hand and she watches the ones on CBS to get her fix.)

Only thing missing was old Facebook pictures of Jamal's brother looking menacing like with a hoodie on or in bad lighting to help justify that he deserved to be shot. God-motherfucking-drat. For those who came in late, this thread is for sharing and enjoying newspaper (and newspaper-adjacent) comics ranging from the sublime to the damned; from Andertoons to Ziggy. If you have some interesting comics to post they are more than welcome, good or bad they all go onto this hoarder's trove we're committed to building each and every year. There are a few exceptions, but the general rule is that the product must have been published in a newspaper or periodical at some point; it's done by an artist whose work was, or it's hosted by Comics Kingdom or GoComics as that counts as syndication now that the printed word is gone forever.

Bad Machinery is one of the exceptions, but oh god please don't start posting Penny Arcade here. Please keep webcomics in the webcomics thread.

Tinkersons is a good comic. I'm not going to argue with anyone who doesn't like the art, but the writing and characters have really grown on me. When it debuted in this thread, I thought it was going to be another hate-read, but nope! I look forward to it.
It has grown on me as well. First Reply All, now Tinkersons, both with weird and sometimes annoying art but decent writing. I think a good example of the opposite is Macanudo (good art, bad writing), and that doesn't seem to get away with it so much in my opinion, but it's pretty new, so maybe it will also grow on me. I'll keep posting it, for a while anyways.

I don't think we have a single webcomic in this thread that wasn't at least on GoComics, such as Bad Machinery. That one also has the distinction of being really good.

Do we have any other webcomics in the thread at this point that don't fit the aforementioned criteria? I'm not counting Medium Large which occasionally shows up because it's a sometimes-posted webcomic by a syndicated cartoonist.

So far The Princess Planet looks like a pretty lovely webcomic. If it meets the criteria to stay then sure, whatever, I'm not the thread police and I'll just leave my opinion here and scroll past it

Dunno. There's a photo out there of Jam drawing a Mark Trail strip on paper, so it's entirely possible. Remember, Jam was Elrod's assistant for a long time, so maybe he learned to do things the old-fashioned way and that's what he's still comfortable with?

Yeah, I explained earlier that GoComics is newspaper farm-league, and we've seen strips that started from there move to syndication even if they were webcomics first. So I think the GoComics rule is a good one. Adding whatever other far-flung webcomics from the worst reaches of 2007 seems like a bad idea, and The Princess Planet also seems like, not... good. Not good or bad enough to justify bending the thread rule.

Yeah, I get it, you're trying to rules lawyer and say a comic that was published in The Toronto Star (the biggest newspaper in Canada) is a 'webcomic', and a comic that has only been published on the web isn't.

That gocomics is allowed in the thread doesn't change the fact that comics published exclusively online are webcomics.

I don't think people want to go ultra-purist and kick every comic that isn't exclusively newspaper out of the thread, but if they do I'll respect that decision.
