Flowers For Algeria posted:just say "all right coal miners/plant workers you’ve wrecked your bodies to extract/shovel coal, you’ve worked enough, harder than anyone, now enjoy retirement starting at 35 when your mine/plant closes." Yeah, UBI and then just waiting for the population to die/leave is basically the only solution I see for coal country. But, I honestly don't know how helpful that would be. Even if general needs are met with UBI, it feels like a community that's been more or less openly declared worthless would still be toxic. Back in 09 I was unemployed for six months. Due to a combo of good fortune and good planning, I had no money issues, could have lived off unemployment for another six months comfortably. I initially thought it would be great, I'd get to just hang out and play videogames, spend time with friends, etc. I was deeply unhappy and depressed after about 6 weeks. Turns out you can get sick of internet porn and vidja. I don't know what happens when you tell a whole community that they're now retirees because society has deemed them unnecessary, but I don't think it'll be all sunshine and rainbows.

it's not rightwing brain poisoning it's how brains work. even zoo animals get depressed sitting around having their basic needs met without any challenges or novel stimuli. if you're retired with lots of money you can travel to foreign countries or whatever. if you're an intellectual type you can read and think deep poo poo, or at least pretend to. otherwise you wind up sitting around watching TV and following Qanon boards for excitement. the answer is broadly-defined community service. instead of useless make-work, government can pay them to help out in libraries, schools, daycares, etc. nothing degrading, just the kind of things churches or community centers do, or used to do. a human connection to the community and a feeling of usefulness is super important to all but the most sociopathic assholes.

the rural/urban divide is tricky politics, it is easy to fall into a utilitarian mindset where the only answer is "go where the jobs are". first one needs to evaluate whether having everyone drive ubers in future megacities in the name of economic efficiency is really the entire plan

You will recall the documentary Harlan County USA . I’m guessing it was just a concerted effort to demonize unions combined with an implementation of the “bootstrap” mindset, although I’m sure there are more layers than that.
