However, this recent turn of events has lead our controller of 30 years to finally get it through our General Manager's head that he needs to get rid of our Office Manager (who is his ex-SIL), or she's cutting ties.

She told me she wants me to step up and be trained to replace our Office Manager.

I don't want to be the Office Manager.

I'm pretty sure our controller realized that I'm not planning on sticking around when I said that I don't think I'm interested. She wants to follow up in "a day or two" and I don't have any offers for employment yet, because I just started looking.

I'm not necessarily afraid of turning it down, the issue is that my controller and I have worked closely together for several years so she'll likely be pretty confident that my "no thanks" means "yeah, I'm on my way out." She said she wants what's best for me, even if that means I'm leaving, but we all know that doesn't 100% rule out the chance that I'll be dropped like a sack of bricks if it's confirmed that I don't want to stay.

TL;DR stayed at a company that was utterly toxic for nearly 8 years when the writing on the wall to GTFO couldn't have been any clearer.

This doesn't happen in CA unless it's "HAY YOUNG MAN, YOU WANNA INSTALL SOLAR/SELL INSURANCE/SELL OR INSTALL ALARM SYSTEMS?!?" Also, the market here is way too saturated which is why I'm looking outside of CA... that at some fresh non-CA perspective couldn't hurt. I've only applied for 5 jobs outside and I've already been contacted by 3 as opposed to hundreds and maybe 10, just the usual "Thank you for applying, you're definitely qualified but we decided to go a different route." generic emails. Though inside CA, I'm looking at jobs staying in academia, which by very definition they already have someone they want to hire they just have to go through the motions since somebody somewhere said," YOU HAVE TO GIVE EVERYBODY A CHANCE!" So they do the academia shuffle which is the industry norm, I just wish it was more like hiring in private industry where if they have someone they just promote them and if not then they throw a job announcement out to everybody.

Sums up the job market right now. I've had 6 interviews for director/CTO positions only to find out somehow the college/university miraculously had the right person working there the whole time, WHO KNEW?!? This is why I hate the normies that impose these idiotic rules into the books to "ensure equity in hiring." Just hire the person from within and move on which is what you're going to do anyway... For those of you not in academia and want to move that direction, good luck because it's about who you know, not what you know. God knows it's not about what you know, the CTO here always wants me to run all the goddamn numbers for him because he's too incompetent to do so himself as evident by board meetings when he clearly has no clue about what numbers go into what project when asked.

I think you'll find this happens fairly regularly in the private sector too.

Had a rash of interviews around this time last year where it quickly became obvious I was just being brought in to round out the numbers when they had already decided on an internal candidate (between obviously bored interviewers, softball questions and nobody taking notes when I'd answer) - which was the response I would invariably get in follow-up messages to HR a week or two later.

Oh, back to house chat: Are you guys familiar with the wonder of self-leveling gel-cote paint? A video popped up for it in my YT suggestions and I thought it would be crap but there were so many real world testimonials that I gave it a shot. Did all the basement trim and just knocked out the closet door down here and it's nuts. No priming, just 1-2 coats and it looks incredible. The only downside is it's a high gloss so the wife isn't too hot on using it for every other room in the house.

Yeah, it's good stuff. Used to sell self-leveling enamel for Sherwin-Williams for a while just after high school, it was impressive how nice you could make trim look with it.

Funny- I see more external hiring for senior positions than I do promotions. This is Silicon Valley, medium size companies. Case in point: me (passed over for promo, got promo'd on job hop last month). Though it's also true that it was who I knew.

Side note: the CEO of the company I just left has apparently sent out an email mentioning layoffs. Probably not in my old group, but still that's a bullet well dodged.

Back on topic- I tested a 2016 Mustang GT PP1. I didn't realize until researching this week that it's a four cam 32v. Which is pretty badass. I also scoured the internet for info on the Mustang and Camaro suspension designs, and man it's hard to find anything useful. But I found 2 videos that actually show some detail and the design for each looks good, and the SS/PP1 packages are a now a hard requirement for me, due to the use of ball joints instead of bushings in a bunch of places. That part sold me. I wasn't sure if it was just a spoiler and stiffer shocks, or more. It seems like it's more.

I'm also scanning Mustang and Camaro forums, which are fine. But goddamn do these people like drag racing. I like it OK in theory, but can't quite stomach playing the "how many driveline bits can I shatter" game in practice. At least you get an hour or so on a road course before things wear out, right?

I am not enough of an rear end in a top hat to be doing this kind of poo poo.

I got NO problem taking noise issues up with the office when they're dickheads about it.

Good plan, hadn't thought of that. I didn't have anyone else anyway, so I ran the car until the engine got up to temperature, and it loosened up the cold grease a bit.

Gonna try starting the Fit again today when the temperature has been above freezing for a while, but I don't have high hopes. I'm pissed, but a starter shouldn't be super-expensive.
