i was listening to npr the other day and it amazed me how all the coal miners who had black lung would not stop saying it was a great job. even setting aside the fact that the disease shortened their lifespans, its backbreaking, injury prone, dirty labor. what is wrong with their brains

If your life has been as lovely as you described would you be too put out that it got shortened?

I think Amber on Chapo explained how her Appalachian grandparents simply could not conceive of life that was not full of suffering - it could not be aspired to or held as an example, all you could hope for was to die and get a mansion in heaven.

You really have two choices - deal with the reality you were exploited and used up so someone could be rich and your life was basically wasted, or else make up a fairy tale version where you're a hard-working man who did what he had to.

People lacking the ability to be truthful with themselves about their lives is one of the biggest problems in the world, it leads to ceaseless suffering.

Shorter lifespan means less taxes to be paid overall. I guess they see this as a win?

Generations of cascaded brainwashing about the dignity of hard work, suffering builds character, toxic masculinity, foolish pride in work/job legacies (doing what pappy and grandpappy did), and literally not having any other good options for supporting a family.

It's sad but the ones who still prioritize white supremacy over the well-being of themselves and family can die off.

I'm willing to reach out to people who are willing to listen and learn and abandon traditional values and thinking and grow as people. Racist chuds can gently caress off and die of black lung.

I would also still appreciate some danger.

You can also die so it makes you a Real America hero like first responders or military. Except you're dying for rich assholes instead of the common good.

Although now that the military is more an instrument of capitalism than democracy, that distinction is already blurry.

I’ve heard stories of dentists who volunteer to do free dental work in Appalachia being run out of town and accused of witchcraft because the people can’t deal with their mouths not being in agony all day every day after a root canal.

sort of the issue is that it was a great job: getting paid well with excellent benefits and a union actually keeping you in some control of your fate. the new option is to move to a tiny apartment in an unfeeling city and work in an amazon warehouse, which turns out to be way more backbreaking, and while you'll live longer it'll be a long bad existence

If TROP hadn't made the word "infrastructure" a joke and the issue was addressed properly by a sane socialist administration, all these people could live reasonably close to where they live now (or not move at all) and have similar physical labor jobs with good pay, good benefits, and union support. Bonuses include no black lung and no capitalist exploitation.

Such people have absorbed the ideology that capitalism is intrinsic to human nature and how people "naturally" engage in commerce. Any problems of capitalism can be blamed on "cronyism." So dismantle the government and eliminate taxes and regulations! If we just sweep all this evil big government away, we'll have purestrain gold libertopia, and you can project whatever you want onto that.

This is why the libertarian movement includes everything from John Birchers to Wiccans.

He also got released on his own recognizance with a $250,000 bond. Meaning he's now walking around free without actually paying any money, while poor people are losing their jobs and rotting in county jail because they couldn't afford $500 in cash bail.
