Alien: Blackout is out and the initial reviews are... very positive. I’ve got it installed on my iPhone but I won’t have a chance to try it until later.

Yet where is that woman now? Tell me, in what heave does she reside? None of them. Because no God bothered to listen or care. If that is what you think it means to be a God, then you and all your teachings are welcome to do as that poor women did. And vanish from these realms forever.

v6 isn’t “officially” out yet, but I got a “not quite final” build of it last night. I haven’t had a chance to fiddle with it yet, though.

He actually didn't. He found a glaring bug in one of the plaintext INI files that is a single character typo. This typo prevented any xenomorph from seeing the level, and was responsible for their unplayable AI.

Gearbox and Randy 'Left My Questionable Scat Porn at Medieval Times' Pitchford never bothered to patch this into the game despite the fact anyone reading this can fix it in under 30 seconds.

Good lord, I’ve been killed twice in that little section between the stages of medical (after the doctor is killed). Because there’s only one vent in and out, once Alan is there, he’s around for a while, and there’s very limited hiding space.

That whole medical area was a brick wall for a lot of people because your options are a lot more limited than they first look because of the level layout and you don't have a whole lot of gear yet combined with it being the first spot where the alien's really after you personally. But something that can help is to remember it actually doesn't have very good peripheral vision and to consider not crouching too much. The alien actually sniffs you out faster when you're crawling because you move a little slower, but if you just walk around normally you also make very little noise, so it's often worth it.

If you haven't used any yet while it's around, you can try throwing a flair to distract it for a second, and IIRC you might be able to craft a noisemaker now, those are REALLY good for this and the next couple of parts of the game since you can just throw them wherever and leave the area. As someone mentioned earlier if you don't have a lot of space you can even throw one straight up and it will confuse the alien briefly so you can at least break line of site.

Android Emulator, I'm using Nox.

So far the game is ok, FNAF meets a bit of Duskers, but with a bad script that spoon feeds the player with stupid information that should be obvious to anyone, and a story that's so far really dumb and I'm only on the second level Weyland-Yutani created a Xenomorph onboard the station, lol, ok. Also the music doesn't fit the game or anything Alien at all, not sure who signed off on them.

Yup, it's a mobile game alright. However, the presentation is really good and the voice acting isn't that bad. Apparently it's only 7 levels and the first two are tutorials as well? Come on.

edit: Nevermind the music complaint, I guess it was just my laptop speakers making it sound like poo poo, doesn't sound bad on my monitors.

edit: The vent door mechanic is terrible, because once the Alien crosses a certain threshold you can't close the door anymore and you're dead. This gives you a very small window to know which vent to close when you have 2 to deal with and you have to visually check both to see where the Alien is coming from. I also don't think that there's directional audio because I don't hear them on my monitors and they're stereo, maybe this is an emulator issue because this would help when it comes to knowing where it's coming from faster.

You'd think that would have been the easiest thing for an official game to get right given how video games in general have ripped off music from the firts three Alien movies for decades now.

So Alien related: the guy who made the marines armor from Aliens and the badass masks the WY soldiers wear in A3 is interviewed on Adam Savages YouTube channel. The dude is a legit armor maker and made all the armor suits in movies like Excalibur and stuff like that. He only briefly talks about the Alien stuff but its pretty cool anyway. He says Finchers idea for the masks were gladiator inspired and still has some of the props at his home in England. Worth watching if you have 20min to spare.

There's this youtube channel full of fan-made "Weyland-Yutani Report Transmission" videos inspired by Alien: Covenant that juxtapose the visual horror aesthetic of H.R. Giger with the David character's nihilistic view of humanity which are quite effective at dialing up the existential dread elements of Prometheus/Covenant up to 11 IMO. They're similar to the ADVENT video on the Covenant Blu-Ray in tone and presentation. Pretty big NSFW warning on both:

What I like is that they don't just look cool, they're practical and show WY sort of knows what they're up against. The thick padded armour is supposed to be layered to allow resistence or at least time to yank off a layer if it gets alien acid on it. The gladiator-like masks again are to protect from face-huggers and be able to quickly detach if one latches on.

They manage to be really weird and scifi but also make sense.

The Alien 3 armor is some of the coolest poo poo ever but it only stops facehuggers from getting to you from the right.

Among the other many awesome things about the arcade game Alien 3: THE GUN, it ends with you dying in battle against a bunch of them because (HUMAN! the game's from when Alien 3 came out but it's clear from the game that Sega saw the workprint and some older scripts) Bishop finds out you killed the aliens leaving them with nothing to take home:

I like how it shows they put some thought into what they were up against... but true to theme it would still be futile because we remember it burning right through Kane's space helmet like it was butter.

The Alien is basically just a space cat (primal, cunning, amoral force of chaos), and it recognized that it had infringed on Jones’ territory.

Hey, he was there first.

I’ve got a screengrab on my PC that I can post when I get home that shows that Ripley has a photo of Jones as a kitten taped to her bridge console on the Nostromo. I love that kind of atmospheric detail stuff.
