I'm not incredibly familiar with these groups or the Maori, but I assume it's similar to how Canada treats First Nations people. There isn't one homogeneous group of First Nations people, that category covers hundreds of different bands over a massive geographical area, but the term stems from the racializing of Canada's indigenous people into one legible group which, as these people slowly organize and push back against their colonization, now have the term thrown in their face because suddenly it isn't a "real" category, thereby erasing the collective history of oppression and struggle for recognition of a vast group of people over the past few hundred years.
