The Magicians feels like a way schlockier version of Legion. It's been very enjoyable so far and they do a good job of making magic seem pretty terrifying.

The Puppy Bowl posted:I was very disappointed in Hereditary. The last 15 minutes turned into an evil dead style looney tunes cartoon while the last minute literally has a character explain the plot of the movie. I was on board for the main twist. Collette and Byrne were great as grieving parents. Still, it was too plodding overall and that ending designed to make up for it totally lost me. Thank you. I was starting to think I was the only person who absolutely hated that ending.

I watched Polar last night. I had to look up whether or not the redheaded guy really has that colouring, because his eyebrows looked super fake. Gis showed me that he does normally look like that. I really liked it, and it was also a bad movie at the same time. Highly entertaining, pretty gory, and the main bad guy is the "I'm the only gay in the village" guy. Also Mad's fringe is a little long for an old man. edit: also the music really doesn't suit the movie! and it's nothing about the north or south pole! It's got a lot of snow though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjekrHwgFsA redreader fucked around with this message at 22:56 on Jan 26, 2019 |

The MSJ posted:YouTube actually announced they are allowing non-paying users to watch their original productions with ads. E.g. quote:While YouTube will produce already-scheduled original content, including the next season of Cobra Kai, a "significant budget reduction" signals an overall slowdown. quote:With the move to make the content ad-supported and free, some sources told THR that YouTube’s budget for scripted content would be greatly reduced. However, YouTube only confirmed a pause in buying for the time being, not a scripted pullback, when asked. However looking at more recent articles it seems like this analysis may have been incorrect.

I finished Sex Education. While I feel like they kind of sidelined the actual premise of the show in favour of the character drama, I find myself not minding because all of the said characters are very human and enthralling. I really like how Eric started out as a pretty cliche camp gay black guy, the show made struggles for him related to all of that in a really touching way, especially with his father who simultaneously loves him but has no idea how to handle him.

Lycus posted:I'm a little iffy about them dipping into the old cliche of the guy who bullies the gay kid is in the closet. I thought a lot of their interaction had weird sexual undertones, so I wasn't very surprised about it. If I'd read about it beforehand I probably would have rolled my eyes, but I was ok with how it played out on the show. I actually ended up liking Adam as a character quite a lot by the end of the season. I categorized him as another dumb teenage boy originally, but there was a lot more anger as the show went on. Despite the plot going in a more stereotypical direction, I think the characters themselves were pretty well-rounded which is what saves it for me. Now that I've finished the season my favorite character is definitely Lilly, the tentacle alien porn girl. She rules.

Dr. S.O. Feelgood posted:Now that I've finished the season my favorite character is definitely Lilly, the tentacle alien porn girl. She rules. I love how non-judgemental the show is about her being a sex weird. It just presents her drawing weird tentacle comics with no connotations. She's just into weird poo poo and there's nothing wrong with that. Also on the dance episode, I love how she dances like some kind of squid. She does indeed rule. edit: IMO the biggest thing that makes Adam work as a character is that his actor is really good. He always has this weirdly thoughtful look on his face despite being a teenage meathead. SirSamVimes fucked around with this message at 05:59 on Jan 27, 2019 |

Filthy Hans posted:Polar is a remarkably unpleasant movie Is it though? It seemed to me like the most generic version of it's type of movie, which was the biggest problem. Every curve ball they tried was just another entry in the grab bag of genre cliches. The only thing it has going for it of any note is the lead. Other than that it's just a mish mash of a handful of other movies that each did the portion being cribbed better. If it had at least even achieved shittieness levels of note it would at least be something. But it was just there, forgettable and rote.

I havent seen it yet, i figure i'd just ask. Is it because it's based on a graphic novel? Or are the no constraints and it's just bad?

Fargin Icehole posted:I havent seen it yet, i figure i'd just ask. Is it because it's based on a graphic novel? Or are the no constraints and it's just bad? It's based on a web comic turned Dark Horse comic, but I don't know if that actually has anything to do with it. I haven't read it. A badass assassin is hosed with by people who know who he is but think they can take him out. It is stated prior to loving with him that it is not a good idea. Said badass then goes on a rampage and kills everyone. The problem isn't that it's bad, it's that it's also not good and thus whatever. It's at best adequate at what it sets out to do and at worst inadequate. It will leave you with no real feeling either way, and you will feel that between 1 and 4 of the actors you've seen elsewhere are wasting their time. If you like generic shooty man movies you'll be fine, but you're not going to get anything of any real value. Maybe it is just being faithful to the comic it's based on. All I know about it is what I read of it's wiki; it's a wordless comic using a Schindler's List pallet that predates John Wick.

If you watch one Vanessa Hudgens Netflix film, make it The Princess Switch. The opening to Polar is some very nice goofy stylized action and the rest is not nearly as fun. Other last page takes: The final act of Hereditary is bad. The Magicians is a fun trashy show but I am very sad they probably won't adapt the heist from the third book.
