So, new issue: The pumps I have are not powerful enough to drive TDI injectors, I need at least 10mm Plunger to get sufficient pressure. code:
This introduces the other issue: Drive shaft size. See, a 17mm pump drive shaft (standard for 8mm-10mm pumps) can drive up to a 10mm Plunger, you CAN put a larger plunger on there, but you risk snapping the drive shaft. The drive shaft also drives the transfer (lift) pump. The other option is the 20mm driveshaft, but unless your pump body already has one, you have to machine it larger to accept it, as well as to accept a new shaft seal. So, we have to modify the pumps we have from 8mm plungers and rotors to 10mm. We should be able to source these parts from 2.5l TDI AEL Injection Pumps. The wagon had an issue. Crank and cam move, flywheel does not. We'll get forensics in a day or two.

I think from memory the pump in my landcruiser runs 14mm plungers or something absolutely nuts like that. I know unmodified they flow enough fuel to push nearly 700HP at all 4 wheels running 35” tyres... If you don’t have any luck chasing bits out of Europe, we also got a fair number of vag turbo diesels here in Aus, so that might be a source of parts too

So, we found out the root cause: Crank timing gear bolt backed out and allowed the crank timing gear to wander and sheared the key on the timing gear itself, crank key is clean. But we lost at least one valve and destroyed a lifter in the process.

I thought the Audi diesel I5s had weird rare rockers for some reason. Never mind then, I'm glad it's not a super difficult quest.

Here's the internals. Not bad damage, one valve at least, and two lifters dead: So easy fix. Brought enough new parts to ensure we can get back on the road: And we'll be bringing something else home with us:

Surely the tensioner should take that up? I had both the head and block shaved on my 4.2TD cruiser motor and the hydraulic tensioner just pulled the belt up nice and tight.

So, the 90q is back to being road ready. Because we're moving. New house, not far away. Unfortunately, also discovered the 90q's heater core is going out, fogging up the interior.

It's a great engine, normally lazy and relaxed, revving at <2,000 at 70mph but can absolutely press on when encouraged. I do get tempted when I see second hand A8s come up at decent prices with the 4.2 though.
