Presenting Nipples posted:It isn't even clear if the author thinks it is unlikely based on the science or based on her own moral judgement. It seems more like it is the latter. I'm sure the CIA is of the moral character to not attempt it. I think that as a scientist speaking in a national magazine called "Scientific American," she's basing her assumptions on published articles and the scientific literature. She mentions the few cases where there has been presumed transmission of cancer, but we don't know how or why these cases happened, they remain medical mysteries for the most part and are not easily reproducible in the lab, much less in some sci-fi spec-ops scenario with an actual human where there's a million uncontrolled variables. Frankly, they could have *tried* to and I would still say that the literature linking obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and eating red meat is much more likely to have given Chavez colorectal cancer than the CIA rubbing his colon with a bunch of untested sci-fi viruses with non-reproducible lab results. Your argument would be more convincing if you could link to a scientific article from a lab working on engineering an oncovirus or which had successfully transmitted cancer under controlled, reproducible conditions. Most cancer models are done with knockout mice where the mice have been specifically bred to have particular oncogenes.

I don't think Chavez was induced with cancer. I wouldn't be completely shocked if it turned out he was, either. The person criticizing me was openly mocking that article as Alex Jones level of conspiracy theory and comparing Venzeula Analysis as akin to Info Wars based on that one article. I think the information provided adequately disputes that assertion.

I will need to take a break of a few months from Twitter after all this poo poo is over. I've been updating my feed obsessively to check up on news for several days now. Here's the worst part of today (although I think this was news yesterday) – a brief interview with an epileptic kid that was detained and beaten by the National Guard for protesting: https://twitter.com/CaraotaDigital/status/1090307609238925314 There have been reports of dozens of kids being detained during this past week. One fourteen-year-old indigenous girl was detained and charged with terrorism for protesting, just to give you an idea, but I think she was released shortly thereafter due to the backlash.

But then nobody seems especially interested in intervening militarily anyways (aside from the Russian "mercenaries" which kinda parallel to what happened with Assad at first), so it's still a pretty lovely comparison! Irony Be My Shield posted:Bolton's notes showed that Trump is in fact interested in a military intervention. I'm sure you can come up with reasons why this time a military intervention to effect regime change won't go horribly wrong, just as people have done for all the past military interventions that went horribly wrong. 5,000 troops is no intervention by themselves. Rumsfeld tried to invade Iraq with the bare minimum and it still took half a million soldiers. That 5K if deployed might be a show of force, or part of an initial buildup towards an eventual intervention, but they're not invading anywhere by themselves.

Pretty sure that isn't exactly what came out of his notes and, even if it had been, that 5k troops aren't going to invade Venezuela. I guess it's fair to say that could count as considering "military intervention" - but not in any way that resembles the boogeyman Iraq/Syria/etc. examples people keep throwing out there. After all, if you're going to count that, then Russia is already militarily intervening with boots on the ground right now. Warbadger fucked around with this message at 16:05 on Jan 31, 2019 |

The US is doing a complete economic blockade of the country and causing the destabilization of Venezuela. The US is pushing for regime change via armed conflict. They would love a civil war and are ensuring Venezuela remains destabilized until it happens. Doing some bullshit false equivalence about Russia troops isn’t going to change that fact. Russia has not been trying to destabilize the county since 2000.
