Part of me wants to say, since water expands when it freezes, it could have cracked the tank apart. I do see that there appears to have been plenty of room in the tank that it could have expanded upward, but I don't know if that would have really prevented outward expansion.

water normally freezes from the surface down and i dont know how strong porcelain is but i can easily see the pressure cracking the porcelain (especially down the bottom)
