Every species can smell its own extinction.
Tawara is pretty good, what with having a Double Dodge and hsi HP Buff skill, and Billy the Kid is really good when you get that crit machine going.

Mozart would be good for your team: he's got a nice art boost and his last skill can drop a whopping 50 crit stars at once.

Hassan is basically the Assassin version of Cu Chulainn.

Hans is an excellent support Caster. His damage is weak, but his NP is excellent. He's like a mini-Merlin - and, unlike most of the other low-rank Servants, you don't have to level him up to 3rd or 4th Ascension to get access to his best stuff. Mozart has some neat skills if you level him all the way, but he doesn't have that incredible always-usefulness Hans brings to the table.

When it comes to Berserkers, Kiyohime and Asterios are both fine choices. Keep an eye out in the FP Gacha for Spartacus, who's a popular farming Berserker because he has an AOE NP and a NP gain skill and a Buster buff, so he can quickly wipe a weak wave when leveled to his last Ascension.

As for anyone else you missed...pretty much all Archers are good, though they tend to be fairly specialized. Among the ones you have, Euryale can use stuns and NP drain skills to buy you a lot of free turns against male bosses, while Arash's powerful NP is often put to work in farming setups to clear a wave of strong mooks and then bring a stronger party member into his place. I hear Billy is a solid Quick attacker, too.

Most Riders are solid as well. Anne+Mary are solid attackers and can dish out heavy damage if you lean into their gimmick, and Georgios is one of the best tanks in the entire game.

Alright, I'm digging this game. Even though this is essentially just characters lining up and taking pot-shots at each other, it's got more than enough fiddly bits and min-maxing crap to keep me engaged. I'm still only halfway through Italy in the story so it's going to be a minute before I'm dog-piling Merlin all over everything like a pro. Before I go into anything else, Jesus Christ this story is boring. I know it's a gatcha story, but gently caress me, I was only halfway through France before I started hammering the skip button. Anyways, this is who I've been rolling with and who has been left on the bench. Is there anyone I should be using/investing in instead? Again, I don't have any particular attachment to any of the characters so going for the waifus and husbandos doesn't really apply here.

The Team
- Carmilla: Fukken A+ chick right here. Sometimes she does feel a bit under-powered plinking away with quick cards until she very suddenly is not.
- Mash: what an absolute loving U N I T she is. I assume it's worthwhile stuffing her face with the all-purpose EXP cards, right? Because that what I've been doing and I haven't been regretting it.
- Ushiwakaru: I got a bunch of her on that Moon banner and maxed out her Phantasm to 5/5, so she wrecks face. Also, the standard operating procedure with her and Mash is to drop her Tengu Strat and Mash's snowflake thingy on turn one and then rank up the arts cards and unleash hell while being drat-near invulnerable to harm. I got these three on my first pull on the tutorial banner and really haven't used any one else. Still-
- Cu Chulainn: I only use him occasionally, but he's a loving madlad and I goddamned love getting his x4 attack combo because it sounds like I'm letting off a shotgun in a library.
- David: Solid enough and seems good for pumping up the arts.

I don't have an active Caster or a Berserker yet. Are any of the bench ones any good? Again, is there a good unit somewhere here that I've overlooked?

The Bench
- Tawara Touta
- Billy the Kid
- Some elementary school child who I'm told is supposed to be Gilgamesh
- Eurayle
- Arash
- Diarmuid Ua Duibhne
- Musashibou Benkei
- Anne Bonny & Mary Read
- Boudica
- Georgious
- Geronimo
- Paracelsus von Hoenhelm
- Cu Chulainn (hoodie version)
- William Shakespeare
- Hans Christian Andersen
- Mozart
- Henry Jekyll and Hyde
- Jing Ke
- Phantom of the Opera
- Hassan of the Cursed Arm
- Mata Hari
- Sasaki Kojirou
- Kiyohime
- Some kind of disgusting furry bara porn Eric Bloodaxe
- Asterious

Essence cards are fun and I can't wait to actually be able to apply some of these higher-tier ones to characters. I'm a little weary about enhancing them or this Limit Breakthrough thing though. What do I do with the monkey-gorillian Tenacity (and co) cards? Can someone give me the low-down on what I should do with doubles of high-starred Essence cards? Are the cards I have any good? I have:

- Devilish Bodhisattva (I got this one from a one-off free summon from the single ticket you get from grinding those green cubes. This feels like a luckshit)
- Moon Goddesss' Bath (x2)
- Golden Millennium Tree
- Moony Jewel (x4 what the hell do I do with these?)
- Angel's Song
- Divine Banquet
- Verdant Sound of Destruction
- Projection
- and then a bunch of three star stuff

Lastly just a couple of quick things:
- I assume I'm supposed to stockpile these Kou cards for when/if i get a 5-star, right?
- Bless daily missions and their loot
- The Fire Emblem: Heroes gatcha is like a nice shower after a day's work. The F:GO gatcha is like someone tossing you naked into the backyard and hosing you down
- I'm only getting sprayed down by the gatcha hose when I have a full 30 rainbow wonka chewing gum chunks, which is really what I should be doing to maximise value, right?
- Jesus loving Christ there's a lot of in-game items and currency and faffing about
- Jesus loving Christ this is grindy as poo poo
- Jesus loving Christ this Merlin dude trivializes everything.
- Is there anything dire I'm really missing?

The story is actually one of this game's stronger points, but you're right that it's really weak at the beginning. France and Rome are a slog, but the story slowly improves through Okeanos, London, and America, and by Camelot both the story quality and difficulty are pretty high.

Your team is fine to start. Carmilla's a great Assassin who gets NP very quickly and does extra damage against girls, of which there are a lot of in a waifu game. Mash is the best defensive servant in the game; her only real weakness is that her level cap, skill upgrades, and NP upgrade are tied to story progression, so it's possible for her to fall behind your other characters if you're slow to clear the story. Ushiwakamaru is a fine single target Rider, Cu is insanely survivable (his dodge is considered one of the best skills in the game) and one of David's skills gives your whole team a dodge, which is very useful when a boss is about to hit you with an AoE NP and wipe out your whole frontline.

From your bench:

Euryale - She's so OP against male sabers that they eventually started specifically giving saber bosses buffs preventing them from being Charmed, and even then she's still a good pick against them. Does silly amounts of damage against dudes, all of her skills are good. Don't confuse her with her useless sister Stheno.

Arash - His NP kills himself. This may seem like a bad thing, but it's very powerful, and it also means it automatically brings in a different servant, which is very good. His Skill 3 is a 20-30% NP charge, so you can give him a CE with starting NP charge, use his skill to NP quickly, then he'll die and bring in Merlin or Zhuge Liang to charge your other servants' NPs. He's very useful once you get to the point where you're trying to put together teams that can most efficiently clear 3 waves in 3 turns.

Anne and Mary - Maybe less useful since you've already put resources into leveling Ushiwakamaru, who has a similar niche as a single target rider attacker. Just be aware that their NP's damage increases the lower their HP is, and can be extremely powerful if they're close to death.

George - The best tank in the game.

Andersen - Andersen is like your little baby Merlin. He's not quite as good, but he's still a very good support who's easy to get, and is cheap to use in terms of team cost. His NP is more powerful than you might think.

Cursed Arm Hassan - Just a solid bro who will help you out with stargen, single target damage against Riders, and has a good dodge to boot. Maybe a little less critical since you have Carmilla.

There's some more in that list who are also decent, but I think those are the best. There are also some other commons not in that list you'll probably get through the Friend point gacha or something sooner or later that are good, like Medusa and Spartacus.

You can combine CEs in the strengthening section. Combining the same CE will increase the level cap on it. Feeding a CE four copies of itself will fully unlock the level cap and also increase the effect. Unfortunately Moony Jewel is pretty useless. However, Demoic Boddisotva is quite good. Pretty much anything that gives you starting NP is.

I'd use Fous on whoever you find you're using the most. While they're a limited resource, you do get a fair number of them. Put the attack ones on your damage dealers, and the HP ones on supports like Andersen who die quick.

The gacha is cruel. The grind never ends, though eventually you start grinding different stuff. Merlin remains OP as hell even 2 years later on JP, though he eventually gets some competition.

One thing I will say is that at the point in the story you're at it's still pretty easy. Merlin's great for bosses and difficult content, but for slogging through the endless waves of wyverns I might bring a high level berserker support instead like Hercules or Raikou and just push the red buttons instead.

It's worth noting the reason we say "the story gets better" is because they legitimately did start paying a lot more attention to writing quality and amount when they realised the game could become something more than what it was at launch (a bad buggy mess). Us NA players started off with an actually-much-improved version and never lived through the actual true hell that was JPN year zero.

He's an Arts support support mostly. Pair him up with any sort of offensive Arts based Servant. He does well with crit servants too since he has a stargen buff. So any sort of Arts based archer is good, or if you have like Lancelot or Li Shuwen. His Noble Phantasm will make a ton of stars.

Well, pouring all my EXP into Merlin was a good decision. I no longer have even the slightest bit of trouble with challenge quests.

Vlad/Merlin/Merlin cleared it in 66 turns with no deaths at all, and Amakusa actually went down in a single Vlad combo. No wonder double Merlin is a meme team. I built for Arts but ended up not even needing it; I probably could have cleared faster if I'd brought Jalter to switch to and dish out even more absurd Hero Creation buster crits.

THAT'S SPECTACULAR.
Thanks for all the advice, folks. Especially that one goon that suggested stapling Devilish Bodhisaavattavbavatav to Arash's forehead. That Phantasm of his seems almost unfair and now a lot of my strat just involves pumping his NP bar and keeping him alive long enough to blart a Stella on to a level's boss and their mooks then switching-out to one of the OP units from the servant list.

I really like that mechanic as well. I try not to rely on them, but bosses can be just HP-bloating, crit-spewing, cheating bastards so using them to win would have otherwise saved me from uninstalling the game and throwing my phone under a truck. It's also a great to just get a chance to use rare, powerful characters that I'm probably not going to get a chance to use anyway. The thing I probably like best about this game is the outlandish and ridiculous character designs and combat animations are. In particular, I like using Merlin (of course), literally any version of Cu, heavy metal Jeanne, this grimdark Dante fellow, the bikini woman riding a blue and gold moon thing, motherfucking HERC, the pink magical girl with pink fire wings, the nerd schoolboy with a red cape for whatever reason, the gigantic snakelady and especially that summer foxgirl who whallops enemies with a beach umbrella. It's just plain fun.

Story-wise, I'm halfway through pirates and I've stopped auto-skipping. It's not grabbed me yet but Francis and co is just fun enough to keep me engaged. You folk said the story gets better, so I'm giving it another shot.

With one luckshit exception, the gatcha has been a bit of a non-event. I've only pulled 5 times on a proper gatcha with everything else coming from the gazillion pulls on the friend one. I've been able to form what appears to be a good, fun team from units from there, so I'm not all that fussed about it.

Archer: my boy Arash. David, Tawara, Billy, Gil and Robin are all benched. I tried Euryale on your folk's recommendation, and her niche is unique and fun enough that I'll probably use her once I get sick of Arash.

Lancer: still Cu Chulainn, and he still both hits like a truck and tanks like a champ. I got another, different Cu, which was confusing. I pulled a Leonidas but as awesome as his art looks, I've yet to even play with him.

Saber: Julius Caesar. Literally the only saber I have. Even if he wasn't I'd still use him because he's pretty good: he supports well, his NP is good and he has boob jiggle physics on his gut. Good stuff.

Rider: still Ushiwakamaru and she is still carrying me even moreso after investing in her. The taunt that Georgious has looks really useful and you guys recommended him, so I'll look into him one of these days. Anne and Mary too, because hey, four stars. I pulled an Alexander too but it seems like he plays pretty similar to Ushi, so pass.

Caster: I luckshit a 5* dude called Zhuge Liang just this afternoon! I had invested in Hans as per everyone's recommendation and he was good, but not blowing me away although his NP was better than expected. Zhuge seems like he's designed in the same way Hans and Merlin is so I'm going to switch to him. It's a bit of a pity that, in a game full of magical girls and monster lads, my first 5* in this game is just a dude in a suit, but hey, a 5* unit. I went into this game expecting to never ever get one so heeeey! I'm a happy chappy.

Assassin: still Carmilla and she still rocks. I've since pulled a Hassan of the Serenity, Charles Sanson and a Fuuma Kotarou, but I'm just having too much fun with Carmilla to bother with any of them.

Berserker: now here's something interesting. As soon as I poured all my cards down Kiyohime's neck, I got a couple of Spartacus's dropped on me, which is a unit you all recommended. And then, this afternoon in the same pull as Zhuge, I got Ibaraki-Douji, who I see as an option in the servant list all the time. Is she good? It feels like she might be good. I really like using Berserkers, so I want to invest in all three of them, but I take it she's the one I should be focusing on the most. I haven't had much of a chance to play her and compare her to the other two. How does she differ from the other two?

So, yeah, there's another newbie report. I'm having fun with my current team, I'm enjoying the story more, I got a 5-star unit and what appears to be a meta Berserker. Good times. Thanks for all your help and send me your friend requests: 072 956 452.

Caster pull: Congrats you got the best/2nd best Servant in the game (Merlin is better in Challenge Quests/Hard Fights but until the 3rd Anniversary no one, no one outshines Zhuge Liang/Waver for 99.9% of the game's time, which is spent farming and on easy quests.)

Berserker: Ibaraki is a good choice to also invest in, because what you want from a AoE Zerker and what you want from a ST boss-killing Zerker is very different.

SC Bracer

DEMAGLIO!
Zhuge Liang or Waver as most people call him is one of the best 5*s in the game, so you're pretty much set for life. Also don't sleep on the other 3* archers, they're all good boys especially Robin.

Leonidas and Cu are pretty different--Leo is a proper tank with a taunt, while Cu is a cockroach so he'll be sitting in your last slot for emergencies, when you need a guy who never dies. I wouldn't say Alex and Ushi are similar either, since Alex is AoE and you do want guys who can do that as well eventually.

Ibaraki is pretty good. She's distinct from Kiyohime and Spartacus by being very survivable thanks to morph and disengage, while having single target NP so she's better at killing big enemies and bosses relative to the other two who are more for nuking down waves.

Really, eventually you'll want to get one AoE and one ST guy for each class trained up plus your support casters, and that'll give you a well-rounded team for taking down content as it gets harder.

Definitely invest heavily in Zhuge (AKA Waver), dude's one of the absolute best support servants in the game and will be immensely useful in basically every situation forever. As for the 'Zerkers, Kiyohime and Spartacus have AoE NPs while Ibaraki's is single target, so the former two are better suited to clearing out waves and doing general day to day farming while Ibaraki's better for killing bosses.
