rydiafan posted:Are farmers evil filth because they grow more food than they need and sell it for a profit? Producing something and selling it to someone who wants it is not the same as owning something and allowing others to use it in exchange for ongoing payments. One is trade, the other is exploitation. In the case of trade both parties get something they want and walk away with it. In other other case one party is withholding something in order to extort payment from the other. It's like, if I have something you want and I offer to sell it to you, I'll get some money and you'll get the thing. But I could charge you that same amount of money and only agree to let you use the thing for a limited time, after which you'll have to pay me again to keep using it. I don't even want the thing, I'm just holding onto it to force you to keep paying me. If we were two kids in a schoolyard then the teachers would step in and put an end to that arrangement.

No, they're evil filth because they grow more corn than anyone needs to live off of govt subsidies for growing it instead of what is actually needed, and they lobby and fight to keep things this way while complaining how hard their "honest" work is.

What about someone who owns one (1) home that they live in, but then have to move somewhere else for a limited time to support themselves or their family and rents out their home for the duration while renting from someone else themself? I wanna know if I'm morally required to stab my landlord

You don't have to be using a thing 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in order to claim that you own it for your own personal use. You can lend your property and you can accept compensation for that. The problem isn't with owning things, it's with owning things you don't even want for the specific purpose of making money by renting them out to other people. We're not setting out legislation here, just describing a general concept. You can come up with all the edge cases and hypotheticals you like but the principal is always the same. And I don't believe that stabbing anyone is a good, moral or productive idea.

By all means ya'll, keep trying prove to us that "actually, landlords good" with mockery and smug superiority; you've almost got us convinced.

This is the form that should be adopted in a socialist setting even, except that socialization is by default and mandated and the capital shell game is excised so you have your cake (a guaranteed place to live with upkeep minimized by socialization) and eat it too (don't need a capital parachute and you are free to pursue work that directly benefits the economy without excess administration of capital wealth).
