I think Zandeberg tends to come across a bit too smug and condescending in her speeches to be an effective campaigner, but she isn't a "worthless lib"

in which zandberg took campaign advice from the evil gently caress that advises bennett and other far right ghouls, lied about it, was caught lying and begrudgingly apologized

in which zandberg says she'd be willing to sit in a government coalition with lieberman as its security minister

a decent summary of zandberg's quest to capture the mythical moderate centrist/center-left vote (in loving israel lmao)

in which Zandberg has the brilliant campaign event idea of doing a comdey roast for her and her party

call her a worthless lib or just call her a loving idiot goofball, but either way she's bad op.

Gotcha, thanks! I believe I was confusing Hezbollah and Hamas and just sorta assumed there was some geographical overlap with the tunnels, as any tunnel the IDF didn't dig themselves (and maybe some they did) is a "terror tunnel."

really, though, this doesn't surprise me at all

there's always been plenty of conflict between the increasingly radical rabbinate (which likes to bully diaspora Jews in order to assert their own power and dominance) and the secular authorities (who are increasingly nationalist and anti-immigrant, but are still mostly bound by laws passed in a time when Israel was desperate for all the friendly immigration and diaspora support it could get)

To me, that sounds a lot like Turkey. Do you think there could ever be some kind of coup if the religious parties took power?

Israeli society is deeply divided in a number of ways, and it's a wonder that it doesn't seem to be anywhere near a civil war yet - though part of that is probably because the government openly capitulates to the radical elements on a regular basis.

In regards to the religious parties, they're still a minority in the Knesset. However, because the right-wing ruling coalitions have been teetering on increasingly shaky margins over the years, the religious parties have been able to extract increasing concessions from the secular parties.

The main context of the religious-secular divide is in the Israeli government's weird half-theocratic system, which is descended from Ottoman times. Basically, secular matters are overseen by the secular government, while any remotely religious government function (such as marriage or burial) is handled by state-approved independent religious authorities who are given full governing powers in those matters. In the case of Jews, there's only one choice of religious authority, the Israeli Orthodox Chief Rabbinate. That means that in order to get a Jewish marriage or a Jewish burial, you need the Rabbinate's approval. And they won't approve unless both you and your spouse can prove to their satisfaction that you're both qualified to be Jewish according to Orthodox Jewish law. And if you don't get the Rabbinate's approval, then the only way to get married is by buying a plane ticket out of the country - there's no legal mechanism in Israel for civil marriage without the approval of a religious authority, but marriages performed in foreign countries are recognized.

Now, these determinations only apply to religious functions and anything else under the purview of the Rabbinate. Other things, such as making aliyah under the Law of Return, are handled by secular civil authorities according to Israeli law without any regard for what Jewish law says. And the Law of Return in particular lays out very loose conditions to be considered Jewish. This leads to a lot of people being considered Jewish for the purposes of immigration (and thus allowed Israeli citizenship) but not Jewish according to the Rabbinate (and thus not allowed to marry). From the Rabbinate's point of view, this is quite clear-cut: if you can't prove your descent through several generations of halakhic Orthodox Jewish mothers (how far back they go is subjective, and thus depends mostly on what color your skin is) then you're not Jewish and must undergo a conversion in order to legally be considered Jewish.

All that is a big problem for many diaspora populations, who immigrate there only to be treated as second-class once they've been there a little while. The group most heavily affected within Israel are Jews from the former Soviet countries, as many Soviet Jews had married non-Jews, leading to a lot of people with non-halakhic Jewish descent which was good enough for the Law of Return but was worth jack squat to the Rabbinate. It's also a huge problem for Western Jews, who are mostly Conservative or Reform, and are thus regarded as non-Jewish by the Orthodox-only Rabbinate. And in the face of all these less-observant Jews coming from outside (as well as influence from growing radical-religious movements within Israel), the Rabbinate is increasingly seeing itself as the sole guardian of true Judaism, acting as a gatekeeper and protecting it from the secularizing influence of outsiders. This leads to some pretty major fuckery with people's lives.

For example, the Rabbinate claims the right to nullify and overturn conversions performed overseas, even by Orthodox rabbis, since the conversions and the rabbis were not directly overseen by the Israeli Rabbinate. There was in fact a big stir a couple years back when they nullified a conversion done by Ivanka's rabbi, causing the person to have to perform a second conversion in Israel under the watchful eye of the Rabbinate. Not only that, but they also claim the right to retroactively revoke conversions if they find that the convertee hasn't lived a Jewish enough life, and there's been cases of them nullifying conversions decades after the fact.
