OK, it's been several pages since the rest of the thread was talking about Quake 1.5, but I just downloaded it and gave it a spin and :pcgaming:

Is it just me or is this way harder? I admit it's been a while since I played any Quake maps but I don't remember Ogres being nearly this hard. Someone mentioned that their aim takes the vertical plane into account now or something, but it feels like more than just that. It's like their reaction time and projectile speed have been cranked way up as well. Scrag projectiles feel really fast too. I end up playing this more like a sniping cover shooter than like I'd expect to play Quake.

Someone who knows, tell me if these are things that have actually been tweaked in 1.5 or if it's just my imagination.

Ogres and stuff can aim up and down and lead you better now.

Are there any old fps or doom mods that have the "amiga game look"? I don't know if the art style has a name but most amiga/dos platform games somehow managed to all have it even with different artist (everything is rounded and side lit though heavy shading) and I thought that I've never played a fps that had that art style.

The closest thing I can think of is Freedoom; raymoohawk’s sprites have some of that style I think.

In considering what you're looking for, Amiga games tended to have the colors performed in a particular way - there was 4096 colors palette to pick from, and the screen would be created from 32 of those colors, and another 32 colors would be made by cutting the brightness of the previous colors in half.

There were further techniques that would allow you to have the whole 4096 colors onscreen at once, typically in ways not suited for moving objects but which could pair relatively static and scrolling backgrounds in high color against the low color sprites or whatever. (There also became the option to pull 256 colors of any kind onscreen at once out of a palette of millions, but this was only available in Amigas released starting in 1992 when all Amiga production would halt in 1994, so it didn't have much life). So, typical Amiga art had to be produced from a limited palette onscreen, and part of that limit was that you got heavy shadow colors of each one "for free". Note also that in games using the higher resolution modes of the Amiga, you would be cut to 16 onscreen colors flat out and the tricks available in those modes usually only got you another 16 to play with.

DOS VGA games had access to any 256 colors at once out of the 262,144 valid colors.
No fancy tricks needed really, so there was much less of the fussing about abusing system limitations to try to improve your art the way Amiga stuff essentially went.

Also for perspective, this was the palette for EGA graphics which was 16 colors out of 64 possible colors: And this is the palette used for CGA graphics which was typically 4 out of 16 colors:

So anyway, the Amiga sort of style wasn't very popular for modding into Doom stuff, as the key limitations and behaviors of the Amiga graphics system were completely irrelevant to what Doom let you do. As well known, the structure of the Amiga graphics system basically made doing anything LIKE doom close to impossible so there also weren't much in the way of Amiga Doom clones to copy high quality sprites and textures from for a Doom mod. To a limited extent you might find "amiga looking" stuff from any Doom project that wanted to copy the styling of European comic book art at the time, since a lot of Amiga stuff was based on said properties, but I don't think that'll be a surefire way to get the style down.

I've pulled out everything except the HUD weapon. I believe a dude named Cherno has been doing some on-and-off work on recreating Gloom in GZDoom, I believe there's an old prototype of the first couple of maps floating around.

Not really. While they did back off slightly (changing frequency slightly and not making them appear early on), they are still in the game and still have runs unfun.

I could ignore the weird backstab obsession AvP2010 had, but it still irks me that the Marine could knock aliens back with a rifle butt. The entire point in previous games was that if they got close you were in for a world of hurt so your arsenal was designed for medium/long range crowd control.

AvP2010 was a slew of bad design choices from the rifle knockback, the conga line of drawn out back stab animations, to the designers having a major hardon for Predators being able to just destroy everything. When people were complaining about the fact Predators just steam rolled everything in multiplayer the devs reponsded that instead of nerfing them to just set the server limit of Predator players to one or two since they felt Predators being that strong gave an “authentic experience” :psyduck:. I also recall the background noise on the multiplayer screen while browsing servers and connecting to games was this monotone high pitched computer tone/CRT screen whine that would causes a headache after like hearing it for three minutes.

I'm not a huge fan of Destiny but at least it works a bit better in their setting.

Bullet sponge enemies are lovely, lazy design and unfun to fight in ANY context, not just realistic environments.

Destiny was super anime space magic but shooting Valus Ta'aurec for literally 35 minutes was still dogshit gameplay.

Fps bosses take work to script, either go big or go home. (Go home in this case is JUST DO NOT DO BOSSES IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME!)

Yes.
I didn't hate the bosses in Project Warlock. They weren't exceptionally good or anything, but they were different enough from the normal enemies that they were compelling enough.

Except I used the bfg type gun to kill the last boss it crashed my game so I didn't get to see an ending or anything if there was one. The Egypt boss also took a handful of lives until I decided to go full Rambo and ignore the spawning enemies.

From a couple pages ago, but I'd unironically love a port of Bulletstorm. I don't care about any of the story (lol) or the dialogue, but the whole arcade-ishness of it all was great, and I miss trying to get the highest score while being as inventively brutal as possible :clint:

EDIT: I don't have DOOM 2016, and I know that the arcade mode is kind of like that, but I enjoyed that Bulletstorm was just... all that, all the time. Also, it was extremely vibrant and colourful, which I appreciate.

I died 7 times in my PW playthrough

Twice to falling in lava due to the superspeed run perk

Five times to the first boss (partly due to learning the hard way about an autorun bug)

I thought the bosses were absolute jank and could have been hugely improved by making them sort of bullet hell encounters with lots of slow moving projectiles to dodge while hammering away at the boss and other enemies

Pretty fun game though
